If you don't have the cash, the interest on your loans could easily send you into an almost permanent state of penury, inescapable even via bankruptcy - better hope your BA in History will help you snag that high paying corporate job.

Most colleges do not charge a differential based on degree or major (unless it is for extra materials like lab fees or music lessons). Therefore it is up to the student to pick a good major no matter what. With the right degree you can easily recoup your initial outlay. Even if tuition was $10 a year, a person going in for a BA in Philosophy or something would still be making a bad investment. Of $10 a year and four years of their life.
