Public schools constantly pit individual student rights versus what school administrators deem appropriate. In most cases, when the issue ends up in court, the decision is usually made in the school's favor. After all, matters of good decorum and order generally come before the right of self expression. But, what if the issue isn't a matter of self expression, but rather religious or cultural tradition? Should the school system have the right to trump what a parent says is good and appropriate cultural observance? Thus we come to the case of the Texas school district versus the Apache kid's hair.

Home Invasions: Your own fault?

Legal, Fri Jul 18.

pO157.

Very few things scare the average person as much as a story about violent, seemingly random home invasions, especially if it was in their own locale. While these attacks usually grab newspaper headlines far and wide, very few people say the victims were asking for it or brought it on themselves in some way. Very few, except for some police officials in Texas, who suggest that many of the  victims were at risk because of their lifestyle or were actually involved in illicit activities.

The Fine Art Of Wealth Management Or The Fine Art Of Tax Evasion?

Business, Fri Jul 18.

MayorBob.

When you arrive at the LGT Group's web site you are greeted with sort of a mission statement. It reads "The fine art of wealth management: Applying innovative methods and instruments to build, preserve and enhance lasting value." Outwardly, that's a fiscally smart strategy - diversify and watch your wealth grow legally - totally befitting a staid European bank located in Liechtenstein. But, now it seems that mission statement might have a less than smart aspect to it as investigators in the US and Europe begin looking to see if innovative = illegal.

The way Marie Jarry sees it, she made a mistake, but a mistake many people make. What the Southington, Connecticut elementary school teacher did was call out sick when she really wasn't. As a result she believes she was coerced into resigning from her job. Teaching school is something Jarry loves almost more than anything and she wants her job back. But, because the teacher's real purpose in faking her sick absence was to appear on a contest run on the Howard Stern Show, the school system won't let her back on the payroll. Thus, she's suing to get her job back.

A little known protocol used by the Nashville, TN police department is alarming some physicians, mental health groups and civil libertarians. A news investigation revealed that for about two years area police officers have had the choice to call for needles loaded with one a powerful sedative to control unruly individuals they encounter.

Should I Stay Or Should I Go?

It was a brief four months ago when we reported on Brett Favre's decision to retire after 17 years in the NFL, 16 of which he spent quarterbacking the Green Bay Packers. Now it seems the superstar is having second thoughts about retirement and wants back in. The team seems to be having a problem accommodating his request. All this comes down to either a classic case of miscommunication or high-handed behavior by a sports franchise or a prima donna act by a professional athlete. Or, it's all of the above.

When a big bank like IndyMac fails, it may cost the government up to $8 Billion out of its FDIC fund to compensate burned account holders.  When huge banks like Bear Stearns fail, the Fed might front cash to buy the riskiest $29 Billion in order to get the rest of the business into the hands of another company and keep the machine running.  And then there are the banks like Fannie Mae (FNMA) and Freddie Mac (FHLMC).

John Conover has an August 6th court date in Johnson County, Tennessee. He will be facing charges arising from a traffic stop in Mountain City. Only it wasn't him who was stopped for violating traffic laws. What Conover is charged with are a variety of charges having to do with what he did with his iPhone. Even though the American Civil Liberties Union says they know of no such law, Conover is charged with "illegal photography" of a police officer.
