I never had any use for Helms, nor did I ever vote for him.

This is absolutely true. I can't think of many states that would send both Jesse Helms and John Edwards to the Senate at the same time. When I lived in North Carolina I knew ardent (white) Democrats who would never in their lives vote against Jesse
