Perry signs real bill with imaginary cause.

Rick "I can't remember more than two things" Perry Governor of Texistan (where even the greyhounds are obese) has signed a bill that protects the saying of "Merry Christmas" in Texas Public Schools. After a recent fertilizer plant explosion, this is the second time that Texas has been covered in shit.

It removes legal risks of saying "Merry Christmas" in schools while also protecting traditional holiday symbols, such as a menorah or nativity scene, as long as more than one religion and a secular symbol are also reflected.

The bill was sponsored by State Rep. Dwayne Bohac who got the idea for the bill after he saw his son's school had a "holiday tree" instead of a "Christmas tree", because Jesus Christ was all about the correctly named trees (it's in the Bible) and a fat, red-suited creepy jolly man, who gave climbs down chimneys and in the middle of the night gives 'presents' to sleepy kids unprompted. No that doesn't sound at all sick and disturbing, like a Catholic priest.

Bohac said this was an important, tough issue. Obviously, the Texas Legislature has its priorities in the right place.

What To Buy: Gun Edition

So as an upstanding, patriotic American citizen I decided to cash in on my 2nd amendment rights. The State of New Jersey has issued me a Firearms ID and a Handgun permit. I must purchase a handgun within 90 days or the permit to purchase will expire. So the question is... what's the most badass handgun I can get for <$1000? Also, do I get a choice of color? Like do guns come in different colors? two-tone even?

E3 2013 and KOA:R

So E3 happened and the new Xbox was revealed but meanwhile y'all need to play Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning.

KOA is a 3rd-person RPG with combat like Darksiders, but no platforming and a well-done open-world RPG engine behind it (and less QTE's).  Great combat like Darksiders?  It's here (and better).  Huge world with tons of lore like Skyrim?  Here.  Crafting, side quests, loot, etc.?  Here.  Great menu system that blows Skyrim out of the water?  Here.  Basically everything you could ask for in a Zelda-style 3rd-person RPG plus Darksiders & God of War style combat, plus Mass Effect style story & dialogue trees (plus much more) is in this game.  On-demand re-spec and re-class?  Got you covered.  Intuitive inventory/item management?  No problem.

I missed out on this game when it first came out- big mistake on my part.  KOA:R is where it's at!

Taylor Chapman, a Tea Party Activist and all-around patriot, told employees at Dunkin Donuts to get their goddamn government hands off her donuts and fought their receipt tyranny, all the while trying to get her cream cheese country back from 'those people' with her business degree. She made a documentary about her protest, which can be found here.

Texas: It's okay to shoot a hooker if she doesn't put out

Seriously:

A Bexar County jury on Wednesday acquitted Ezekiel Gilbert of murder in the death of a 23-year-old Craigslist escort...During closing arguments Tuesday, Gilbert's defense team conceded the shooting did occur but said the intent wasn't to kill. Gilbert's actions were justified, they argued, because he was trying to retrieve stolen property: the $150 he paid Frago. It became theft when she refused to have sex with him or give the money back, they said.
I'm at a loss for words.  Sometimes I'm truly embarrassed to be an American citizen.  What the fuck is the point, if this is the best we can do?

To help out big brother, I am trying to install a 4 to 8 camera system in the house. Any recommendations? I have looked at Samsung DVR security systems at Sam's Club. They seem like they would do the job, but I wanted to see if any one had experience with them. I also saw a company called Swann.

I want to have:

And also any other suggestions.

Fertility & Soap-Operas

port1080.

Posted to Diary on Mon May 13, 2013 at 12:45:01 PM EST. RSS.

As I've harped on before, TFR is declining world-wide and overpopulation fears are totally overhyped. This piece gives a nice map & chart heavy overview, throwing in a new twist I wasn't familiar with:

We focus on fertility choices in Brazil, a country where soap operas (novelas) portray families that are much smaller than in reality. We exploit differences in the timing of entry into different markets of Rede Globo, the network that has an effective monopoly on novelas production in this country. Using Census data for the period 1970-1991, we find that women living in areas covered by the Globo signal have significantly lower fertility. The effect is strongest for women of lower socioeconomic status and for women in the central and late phases of their fertility cycle, consistent with stopping behavior ... Finally, we provide suggestive evidence that novelas, and not just television, affected individual choices."

Indoor pot production leaves giant carbon footprint:

One kilo, or 2.2 pounds, of pot grown indoors, the study says, leaves a carbon footprint equivalent to driving across the country in an old VW van seven times. Producing one joint is equivalent to leaving a light bulb on for 25 hours.
