A "Scientific" American writer ponders this important question, and not so reluctantly concludes "yes".

Maybe what we need in the White House is someone who is a real politician, a negotiator and dealmaker in the mould of a Clinton or an LBJ. Instead, we have the choice between a manager and a law professor. I'm not optimistic that either of them will be able to do what needs to be done.

Carbon dioxide emissions in the United States are lower than at any time in the past two decades. More remarkably, CO2 emissions per capita are lower than at any time in the past half-century.
How did this miracle come about?
Is it because the Democrats are giving tax cuts to the well-off to buy electric cars?
Is it because the Democrats squandered billions promoting solar energy?
Is it because President Obama banned oil drilling in the wake of the Deepwater Horizon disaster?
Is it because President Obama wants to raise taxes on "Big Oil"?
No, it is none of those things.

The American Academy of Pediatricians has tentatively backed the practice of circumcision, saying it leads to an average healthcare savings of $313 over the life of a circumcised man, and circumcised men are significantly more resistant to a number of incurable viral STDs, including herpes, HPV, and HIV/AIDS. The benefits don't just accrue for men - women who have sex only with circumcised partners are less likely to acquire bacterial vaginosis and trichomoniasis. When all is said and done, the Academy found even though there are occasional complications, when looking at the population as a whole the benefits gained more than justified continuing the practice.

"Dumping iron into the sea can bury carbon dioxide for centuries, potentially helping reduce the impact of climate change, according to a major new study. The work shows for the first time that much of the algae that blooms when iron filings are added dies and falls into the deep ocean."

Astronomers have noted the disappearance, over a mere two-year period, of the dust around a young star in the constellation Centaurus. While they have proposed a couple of hypotheses as to what happened, they conveniently overlooked the possibility that somebody is gathering resources.

Cheap energy

One of my worries is that increasingly scarce* energy will ultimately do us in. Every now and then, I come across something that gives me hope.
There are estimates using just the performance of some of the devices under study that 1% of the nickel mined on the planet each year could produce the world's energy requirements at the order of 25% the cost of coal.
I am curious about one line:
The neutrons set up isotope cascades which result in beta decay, heat and transmutations with the heavy electrons converting the beta decay gamma into heat.
Beta decay produces an (anti-)electron and (anti-)neutrino. Anybody know what the gamma is that he's talking about?

What kind of keyboard do you have?

I decided to get myself a mechanical keyboard. Though, I probably have used mechanical keyboards in the past many, many times I forgot how they felt, having used mostly laptop keyboards and slim-profile chiclet-style keyboards. It's really amazing the kind difference more tactile feedback can make with something like a keyboard. The sound and the feel of the keys has already improved my typing and has also improved how my hands feel - my fingers don't get as fatigued. The keyboard I bought is considered a gaming keyboard, the Razer BlackWidow. I don't do any gaming, so my whole reason for buying it was for the mechanical keys. I'm happy with it so far, but I also heard that the Das Keyboard is a very good keyboard. I couldn't find it in the store though, only online, and I preferred to test the keyboard before buying.
