A federal jury has convicted five muslim immigrants of conspiracy to kill US servicemen and women stationed at Fort Dix. The men (three of whom are in the United States illegally) face life in prison at sentencing. They were arrested in May of 2007 and were accused of obtaining seven firearms to attack the military base with. Prosecutors alleged that the men were homegrown terrorists who sympathized with radical extremists overseas. Most of the evidence centered around informant testimony, statements to undercover police, and videos obtained which shows the group training for an attack.
More information will be added as it becomes available.

The American workplace has become less unionized over the past quarter century. Organized labor's share of wage and salaried workers has shrunk from 20.1% in 1983 to 12.1% in 2007. A contentious issue which will face the incoming Congress will be legislation which may change those proportions in labor's favor. Proponents of the legislation say it is all about protecting workers and is a matter of fairness while opponents contend the legislation is anything but fair and the the last thing the nation needs as it faces a deep recession.

George W. Bush finally managed to deliver a shot across the bow of Roe v. Wade just before he exits the political stage. Rather deftly waiting until the eleventh hour of his administration, his Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) issued new federal guidelines which will almost certainly end up being undone by incoming President Barack Obama - when he finds time out from rescuing the economy to pay attention to this.

New York state is in a fiscal crisis. Facing a massive tax loss due to the downfall of Wall Street, and having so far been ignored in a request for a federal bailout the Governor faced having to cut spending 12% to match revenue decreases. Instead, he proposed a budget that raised taxes and fees so much that the state spending will be able to grow by 1.1% to $121.1 billion. Contained in the proposal is a new 18% obesity tax on sodas and fruit drinks that are not considered by the state to be healthy. Unfortunately, the logic behind the plan is not just fiscal. The Governor has argued that a tax is necessary in the government's fight against obesity, poor health and bad choices by its citizens. He urged his constituents to support the new tax because its a "small price to pay for our children's health."

What's in a name? The answer is plenty, if you're a food store selling decorated cakes not wishing to offend their clientele. Likewise, the answer is plenty, if you're a family with an absolute fascination for the Third Reich with a penchant for naming their kids after some of their heroes. Such was the dilemma when one family asked their local Shoprite to inscribe the name of their three-year-old on a birthday cake. No, they would not be wishing a happy birthday to a kid named Adolf Hitler and the entire Campbell clan of Holland Township, Pennsylvania is mad.

Pledging to combat the global economic crisis, the Federal Reserve Bank today cut a key interest rate from 1% to 0 to 0.25%. This is the lowest the federal funds rate has been at. Cutting this rate cheapened the cost for banks to lend each other money at a time when the Fed acknowledges the economy has worsened since its last meeting in October.
