Carrot links?

There are ^ links next to the number in comment headings that I don't understand. At first I thought they were Y-referencing-X indicators but that didn't make sense for long. Unrelated comments are linked. What's going on?

Caret links

5.00 (informative)

The carets should have been nifty upward-pointing arrow images, but that image isn't yet on the production server.  The numbers are supposed to give "in-reply-to" information, but it gets screwed up for some reason.  So, in the meantime, they are annoying distractions that provide little useful information.

I may be wrong, teaweed, but it seems that the caret and number (and the X) are pointing you to the parent post. Cllicking on any one of them will link you to the parent, as will clicking on "parent" beneath a post.

I think this is correct, though I am pretty sure I've observed instances where the number shown did not match the number of the actual parent post, though they do seem to work well for the most part.

I suggest that we include some sort of hover text that says "Link to parent post #n" when the user hovers over the link.

The number error I've seen counted subQ comments as if they were "real" comments.  Thus diaries are immune and the numbers work correctly.

Humorless. Cretinous. What'd you expect?

Profwhat has told me this is a bug - it will be fixed eventually so that the numbers make sense in relation to the posts.
