The West has the most Promiscuous Girls

A recent study in The Lancet proposed a few interesting points about sexuality across cultures.

The study by researchers at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine is billed as the first global sex analysis, spanning 59 countries. The authors surveyed thousands around the planet and found that the Western world has the most promiscuous residents, having the most sexual partners. In addition, they also found:

Teenagers are NOT having sex much earlier on average, as is commonly believed by some.

Across the board, sex seems to start on average between 15 and 19, with men starting earlier.

While most had had sex in the past year, few had more than 1 partner.

However, up to 1/3 of those under 25 in western areas had sex with multiple partners, but very few in Africa reported the same.

Poverty, gender issues, and mobility may be more important than promiscuity in actually developing a sexually transmitted disease.

One of the authors, Professor Wellings, uses his research findings to call for an end to criminalizing certain bedroom activities, and providing higher levels of sexual health services (including condoms) for young women.

As he states, "Sexuality is an essential part of human nature and its expression needs to be affirmed rather than denied if public-health messages are to be heeded."
