From Way Down South, Not So Very Far Off, Illegals Brought Us The Whooping Cough.

"Whooping cough" causes about 30 to 50 million cases per year, worldwide, and kills about 300,000 (although no more than a few dozen annually in the US). However, it is preventable with vaccination and until recently was not a major problem in the United States. This may be changing as the pool of unvaccinated, illegal immigrants in the US grows to ever-larger numbers. With such numbers rising, the inevitable pointing of fingers is taking place.

Some blame schools for crowding children into cramped classrooms, some blame the fact that the whooping cough vaccine loses effectiveness over time and patients are not requesting boosters as often as they should. Others point out that this may be part of a larger trend of preventable diseases returning.

Then there are those that cast aspersions at illegal immigrants.

Whooping cough is a bacterial disease that is caused by the gram negative respiratory pathogen Bordetella pertussis, a microbial infection that only infects humans. It gets its name from the symptoms it causes; namely, a week-long infectious period of coughing and sneezing, causing a lengthy period of violent coughing which produces a "whooping" sound. The disease can lead to malnutrition and death in serious cases, and usually takes one or two months to fully recover from; causing a significant amount of lost time from work or school. Although it is a bacterial disease antibiotics are not effective unless given after the earliest onset of symptoms. Infection with the disease or vaccination against the toxin does not confer permanent immunity, requiring several "booster" shots over one's life which are often forgotten. Unfortunately, whooping cough outbreaks around the country have been increasing over the past few years, and are increasing by at least a factor of 25X since the 70s.

Dr. Madeline Cosman, writing (PDF) in the Journal of American Physicians and Surgeons lays part of the blame at the feet of illegal immigrants. She points out that some diseases such as polio, which had been generally considered eradicated from the US have been found in illegal immigrants, and it is not uncommon for other migrants to import intestinal parasites, malaria, antibiotic resistant tuberculosis, Chagas disease, and hepatitis A,B, and C. Dr. Cosman references a recent outbreak of dengue fever in a Texas border community, a disease which is seldom found in the US.

Others claim that increases in leprosy are due to illegal immigrants, and that illegals are taking advantages of US Law (click the "no thanks" button to see article) to demand free emergency room care for their exotic illnesses.

These groups state that for the collective health of the United States, all illegal immigration should be checked with the building of fences, the posting of guards along the border (by recalling troops from overseas), and rescinding the citizenship of children born in the US to illegals, and removing all those in the country without documentation. Dr. Cosman argues that only by requiring illegals to re-apply and go through the same medical health checks that legal immigrants do, can the future safety of the United States be ensured.

Great writeup.  Yet another reason to crack down on illegal immigration.

Immigrants should go through the same screening process as international container cargo.

The only screening illegal immigrants go through is whether they can cross the desert at night.  It's a pretty rough estimate of their health, but my guess is that 90%+ of our fat, lazy American citizens couldn't.

The real issue is that there is no healthcare for these folks, which ensures that they do not get vaccinations, nor do their kids.  If we actually provided reasonable health care, these issues would go away.  It's one of the reasons TB is coming back in low income neighborhoods.  Vaccinations & preventative health care is so much cheaper than dealing with the effects of diseases that weren't prevented.  Unfortunately, most governmental organizations can't see that far ahead.

Somehow I doubt illegal immigrants' health problems would be helped more by having the same government they're trying to avoid in charge of all healthcare.

I agree that vaccinations & preventative health care are the best solution. There's a system already in place which encourages both: legal immigration. If we're going to commit more resources to cross-border health concerns, it makes more sense to build a border fence and increase naturalization, both staff and quotas alike.

Well, I'll go ahead and chime in here with some anecdotal stories of my own.

See, I work in a relatively specialized, technical field. For whatever reason a lot of my co-workers are non-US citizens (easily <20% of the folks at my paygrade in my department are US citizens). From the few I have talked to about this issue (not all at work, mind you) it seems the legal immigrants want to string up the illegals more than most anybody else.

You see, apparently to get into the US legally anymore it involves a rather lengthy and detailed background check and general bureaucratic nightmare. The government wants financials, health histories, criminal background checks, fingerprints, trips to distant consulates, personal interviews, byzantine bureaucratic tomfoolery, photographs, etc. All for people who have graduate degrees in an area that is a shortage here in the US and who have guaranteed jobs  in the US and who will pay a hefty sum in taxes for services (social security, medicaid, etc) that they likely will not consume in any way as many will return home with work experience gained, or simply stay longer and pay more taxes but take no services due to their decent salaries and education.

I am not saying this is a bad thing. The folks I talk to generally don't think this is a bad thing. They seem to understand the "need" for security post-9/11. What they are annoyed about (in general) is that some folks can simply show up, having bypassed all of this rigamarole illegally.

Nobody is opposed to folks coming here and building a better life for themselves but would it be too much to ask if everybody just followed the darn rules?

I apologize to my co-workers, friends, etc and agree that it is not a fair system. But, due to decades of inaction and our lawmakers willfully ignoring this problem this type of shenanigans is allowed to occur.

Roses are red, some diamonds are blue, and that's Mr. pO157 to you.

I'm a legal immigrant, and I realize perfectly well that the U.S. needs its illegal immigrants.  Until we change the immigration rights for people who are not educated, and not from Europe, we're going to continue to have illegal immigration.  It's rather ridiculous to say "yeah, there is a health problem, but wait, let's solve this other unsolvable problem before we address the health issue."  We do not need to address illegal immigration in order to address the health issues that come with illegal immigration.
