James Brown, the man known as Soul Brother Number One (among many other self-given titles), has died of pneumonia on Christmas day at the age of 73.

The Rock -n- Roll Hall Of Fame inductee was one of the most influential musicians ever to put rhythms to wax and was also one of pop music's most recognized icons. From his signature pompadour hairstyle, to his brash vocal grunts, to his electrifying dance moves, James Brown was a mover and a shaker of inestimable significance to popular culture.

Mr. James Brown's dynamic showmanship remains timeless. His style has been celebrated throughout generations. As one of the most sampled artists to date, he has more honors attached to his name than any other performer in music history.

Mr. Brown is a three-figure hitmaker with 114 total entries on Billboard's R&B singles charts and 94 that made the Hot 100 singles chart. Seventeen of these hits reached number one, a feat topped only by Stevie Wonder and Louis Jordan.

The Hardest Working Man In Show Business wasn't without his dark side, as problems with the IRS, and charges for drug possession, assault and spousal abuse are among many things that tarnished his reputation in his later years.
Clearly though, Brown's influence on music and pop-culture was more than enough to override the darker, erratic - and often illegal - behaviour of his later years. The styles of music he influenced along with those who perform are almost too enveloping to list; suffice to say that the man known Mr. Dynamite will be missed by a huge number of people all over the globe.

The Washington Post's Richard Harrington has an eloquent little piece about Brown which is a worthwhile read.

Only James Brown could turn a simple Huh ! into something with multiple meanings -- all of them thoroughly convincing.

Thankfully, whether 40 years ago or 40 years from now, you never just hear James Brown. Whether on the radio or whatever big playback machine you choose, you'll feel his sweat as any of several dozen songs conjure images as timeless as the music: J.B. gliding on a cushion of air, moonwalking decades before Michael Jackson or Neil Armstrong; J.B. slamming to the floor in seemingly painful acrobatic splits, yet popping up immediately in full spin; J.B. falling to a knee, microphone in hand, a beggar man for love or attention. There will still be nonstop flash in the feet, fire in his soul.

Generations of musicians listened to James Brown, looked at him and took what they could, regardless of the kind of music they played. Much imitated, he was ultimately inimitable.

Popmatters also has an interesting slice-of-life look at some moments of Mr. Dynamite's career.

Somewhere in my soul, there's always Rock -n- Roll... Joe Strummer

So, I wake up this Xmas morning and I go out to get the wife a cup of coffee so we can get an early start on entertaining the rest of the family for the day.  I have NPR on and they're broadcasting BBC World and the announcer says that James Brown has died.  And I go, "oh shit" to myself because I know if there's anyone who can be credited with injecting funk in modern music it was James.  And I remember the time I saw him live back in the late 60s when he did a USO tour in Nam.  At any rate, I'm listening as the BBC announcer, in his veddy, veddy British accent says "and here is a listen from one of his top hits" and on comes "Sex Machine" and a smile passes my face.  I'm sure James would be absolutely up on his toes in his patent leather loafers at the Pearly Gates going "Yeeeeee-Owowwah" and then going "two time, now."

Illegitimi non carborundum.
