Introducing Your Board

thefadd.

Posted to Media on Wed Jul 19, 2006 at 10:10:34 PM EST. RSS.

On behalf of the board selection team of t_slothrop, housewife2k, profwhat, port1080 and myself, I would like to introduce you to the Board of Directors which will head up our non-profit cooperative at treesandthings.com:

Joshua Vanderberg
Rich Dubielzig
Mary Jeffery
Shane Nelson
Tom Cmajdalka
Philipp Hoffmann
Logan Hawkes

Obviously, we were not able to select everyone who threw their hat into the ring and we are much appreciative of everyone who was interested. To our pleasant surprise, we had the opportunity to select from more than double the number of candidates that we as a team initially felt would be necessary to put together the first board for our collective venture. We feel we have put together a quite diverse group of people who collectively meet the expectations for a board which we as a selection team put forth to the community three weeks ago on June 24, 2006.

On this board we have experienced voices. Experience in serving on non-profit boards, experience in software coding and experience in our community's history at plastic.com. On this board, we also have fresh voices. We have plastic-lurkers, we have business entrepreneurs and we have people who have already stepped forward decisively in leading our new online community. We were able to find the tech experience, the business experience, the plastic experience and the humility in leadership that we sought. We are eminently grateful to all who applied and we are eminently grateful to our new board for volunteering to run this place for us all.

Hi All,

How do I introduce myself?  I didn't post on the old plastic site very often and haven't posted at all for years.  I did read it though, every day.  It was one of the best sites on the Internet.  I always enjoyed reading the subq, even though I was never able to post to it myself.

I didn't want to let plastic die, so I started this site.  I'm a techy - I run a webhosting company over at http://webqualityhost.net/.  Seemed like it would be easy to put my skills to work and get a new site up and running.  I don't yet have many hosting clients, so I also spend time doing website programming, mostly in PHP with a mysql database, although I did start out in Perl.  And I live on a small island between Vancouver Island and Vancouver.  The registered-user count on treesandthings will soon pass the number of full-time residents on my little island.

Any other questions? Just ask.  I don't have time to read all threads/comments on the site - so email me if you have questions that I miss.

He's web-savvy    (tubes? check!)
He's the impetus  (free time? check!)

So far, I like the NewCarl better. He's got that NewCarl smell without any of the craziness you've come to expect.

Thanks, Shane, I guess is what I'm trying to say.

What the heck do you mean, {koos}? I followed the link (and even now I am downloading iTunes setup), and I still can't grok what's up. Admittedly, my study of Senator Steven's 'thing' was cursory, but I thought I'd be illuminated by just one click & a quick scroll-by.
Sorry.

Call me Philipp Hoffmann.

My real name of course is nattyphil. Like others on the board I was a member at plastic.com for some years. My academic background is in Law and also History. I have an interest in writing, and documentaries.

I live in Brisbane, Australia where I work as senior analyst at a web development company. We mainly cater to government and education. Thus we focus quite a bit on IA, usability and accessibility.

I volunteered for the Board in a mad grab for power!

Seriously though I am interested in protecting and nurturing this community. I look forward to the journey.

Here's what you need to know about Mary Jeffery: I'm a business developer for a software company in Toronto. I have limited coding skills, but I'm a quick learner so if the need arises for me to roll my sleeves up and get down in it, I'm game.

Thanks to plastic I know a little bit about a lot of things, I know some kick-ass jokes, I have a bookcase full of books that I'll eventually read someday, I've got hundreds of songs in my music collection that I'd otherwise never have heard of, and I have fellow former plasticians to thank for all that. I was a little lost when plastic disappeared, so when the call for volunteers went out, I was eager to give something back.

I don't have a bold action plan, all I know is that I want a place on the internet where intelligent discourse and community spirit can flourish, like it did on plastic once upon a time. Only better!

As one of your new board members, I thought I'd let you know a bit about myself.  I discovered waitingforplastic and plastiverse a too late to be part of the setup or technical development side of things, but I wanted to be involved somehow with the development of the new site.  All I'm bringing to the table in terms of experience is a bunch of suggestions on the Wiki, a box of old stickers in my closet, and something over 1 Kkarma on the old site without having any enemies that I noticed.

My Master Plan, such as it is, is to see the site grow again to the point where it exceeds the size and presence of Plastic.com, which means

  1. Attracting new readers who weren't part of Old Plastic

  2. Supporting original reportage from our members in addition to the standard recycling of other people's news

  3. Promoting features of the site that encourage spirited debate and/or discourage paranoid recriminations

But the biggest reason I joined was because I was worried that a board of directors might turn the site into something that I, personally, would not want to read.  And I wanted to be part of the process for a change, rather than sitting around on my ass fuming about the mistakes other people were making.  I don't know of any other website that has a board of directors, so I think we're all going to be winging it.  I'm keeping up hope that we will end up with something cool that all members can all be justifiably proud of.

congrats to all of you, plus dan and shane and thefadd,  without whom we'd still be a weak-ass blog page.

I'd like to take this opportunity to gently and good-naturedly harrangue you about keeping up the pace of the site's improvement.   I don't think I'm the only person who considers this period an extended beta,  that is,  feeling out the site and figuring out what is needed and not needed.      Rather than lay down a laundry list of what we could/should do in the site,  I'd like to ask what the proper etiquette and channels are for suggesting/requesting/implementing such tweaks.  So my questions are:

*Is the board solely responsible for deciding what features come and go?

*If editors are required and selected, will they have a regular avenue to give feedback to the entire board?

*How should users express their concerns or ideas about the site?

*Will there be metas for every single implementation, or a regular (perhaps every 30 or 60 or 90 days) meta that allows for community input?

*What other things should the rest of us try to understand before we spout off our most helpful expressions?

Good luck with your and our collective endeavor!

port, profwhat, T_slothrop and housewife2k for sure. While I was a bit more of the public face everybody on the board formation team more than pulled their weight. If future endeavors by this community work so well together, we'll be in great shape. I know we were only around for like a month but each member of the team stepped into key leadership roles at various times.

I'm thinking that the first thing that needs to be done is schedule a board meeting to hash out as much of those answers as soon as possible.  But right now, my own inclination is to say:

*Is the board solely responsible for deciding what features come and go?
Yes.  But it wouldn't be much of a board if we didn't pay attention to feedback from users.

*If editors are required and selected, will they have a regular avenue to give feedback to the entire board?
*How should users express their concerns or ideas about the site?
*Will there be metas for every single implementation, or a regular (perhaps every 30 or 60 or 90 days) meta that allows for community input?

I'm thinking that we should have a kind of quarterly report diary that will go over finances, activities, personnel changes, and other news, and the comment section could act as an open floor to air user issues related to meta.

You can also add suggestions to the Wiki at any time and have them discussed there, albeit a little more slowly these days.  And if the matter is urgent, it may be enough to leave a comment on the developer's latest diary page.

*What other things should the rest of us try to understand before we spout off our most helpful expressions?

Read the Plastiverse Wiki to see what has already been suggested, and if anyone's already added some arguments for/against the idea.

Read the Scoop Administration Guide to get a feel for how your suggestion might be implemented.  Section 4 also doubles as a good user manual for getting around the site.

Or... there could just be one meta sidebar, like they had with the "call for designers" the other day. Maybe not as prominent, but like a sticky in a "normal" forum.

Or it could go in the FAQ when that gets done.

But I agree, a place for people to kvetch (er, discuss meta issues) and a place for people to make suggestions is required for the site to continue to evolve.

I wasn't too excited at first about Scoop's Diary feature, but the more I think about it the more I feel it may be a good way for board members, editors, and technical folks to keep in touch with the community.  There's not really a preferred place or format for meta discussion, so since we have this feature I think we should take advantage of it.

I'm probably going to start keeping a semi-regular diary here explaining what sorts of technical things have been going on and what we hope to do in the future, and I'd like to see board members do the same.  It's an easy way to get feedback from users, provides a history of communication that can be referred to in the future, and would mostly eliminate the need for meta stories on the main page.

Diarys are a great idea to keep, because it will give the hardcore community members more content to digest and kick around.  However, I think it may be a lot of work to keep up with potentially 15-20 diaries to get the vibe.   A look at the Kuro5hin homepage, whose code this site's code is based on, shows a section layout that includes a seperate meta category.   If that sectional layout is adopted, (in contrast to the slash/plastic/digg sidebar) count me as a vote for having a "meta" section, prioritized way at the end.  I think its pretty obvious that metas can assume a fairly active readership and comment base (even an early meta here got many comments for the current average)  and it would be an easier catch-all than a whole series of individual diaries.    Furthermore, a dedicated meta section would (hopefully) keep too many metas from appearing in the Q.  If users knew that metas were regular,  they could wait until the next session to raise their point, instead of "spamming" the Q.

I feel exactly the same way. At first, I was like wtf is this crap. But I think it's already provided a great avenue for meta. I think it proved itself in this regard just recently with the "fake stankow" incident. Everyone who wanted to know what was going on pretty much did and it didn't take a 500 comment poo flinging flame fest on the front page for that everyone to get their info.

If the board members and technical team keep up communication through their own diaries and reading others, I'm starting to feel like "the meta question" is kinda solved. I'll also continue to operate the wiki (such as it is) and hopefully improve that as well.

So I took the initiative to read a bunch of diaries.  I will concede that it can lead to productive meta discusssion without the poop-fest that metas and subQ metas can be.  However, I'll maintain that it will be a pain in the ass to try to keep up with several diarys using just the search function.  Unlesss the site builds in capability to queue up new diary entries, or have a page dedicated to tracking all diarys,   I can't envision trying to search for dirays of 10+ people just to stay current.  That's my best argument for a regularly scheduled meta.

My name is Tom, but you can call me tomc.  I just moved to Portland, Oregon, and work for Intel Corporation.

I've had the opportunity to serve on a number of non-profit boards, including a Waldorf School and an Inner City Adult Literacy Program.  I've started a non-profit from scratch, and recently helped rescue another one from bankruptcy.

I've hung out on Plastic since it's inception, and despite it's flaws, have always found it to be informative and entertaining.  Well, most of the time, anyway. I certainly enjoy the camaraderie.

I'd like to see the post-plastic community live on and grow while maintaining not only the thoughtfulness of the discussions, but also their free-wheeling nature.  It's a unique combination that I have yet to find anywhere else.

I also find it awesome that a few good people stepped forward to actually do something about rescuing the Plastic community.  We should erect a statue or something.

I can't help but notice the lack of diversity on the board - a situation that I hope you'll remedy soon.  There appears to be only one woman, or a mere 14% of the board members. (This site was built with a glass ceiling. You should all be ashamed.)

There is a clear need for an affirmative action program to increase the female representation on the board.  Or you could make Logan wear a dress.

The sadder fact is that it's actually rather representative of the community at large at this point. I know you're being both serious and tongue in cheek at the same time -- I would love to see more diversity not just on the Board but also on the discussion board. Not that plastic was so great at diversity itself but it's been my impression that a good number of the female, international, convservative and gay voices haven't made it over here yet.

While I think a meritocracy is great (though the U.S. and many institutions in the country are not meritocracies), the implication that certain minorities (whether it's women, racial minorities, queers, transgenders etc) get in through politics serves to demean their actual contributions.  While I understand that's probably not what you meant, it could be taken that way.

Yes, Season 3 premires in October. I was at the Battlestar Galactica panel at ComicCon this weekend, and have all the geeky details. If you want to go in fresh, stop reading now.

--------------------------------------------------

OK. We'll be going on board a Cylon base ship and learning a lot more about Cylon society and philosophy. Naturally, this means we'll see a lot of Boomer and Six as well as their nemesis, Xena (OK, whatever Lucy Lawless' character's name is). From the fan service department it's worth noting that Cylons aren't big on clothes.

Back on New Caprica, as you remember, everything's gone to hell. The colony wasn't doing all that well to begin with (due in some part to Baltar being a complete tool), and that was before the Cylons arrived. Both Battlestars have jumped away, leaving the remenants of the human race in a bad way. In season three we'll see the Battlestars looking for a way to return and fight, as well as a resistance movement. I speculate that we'll get to see Starbuck abandon her role as a wife and return to combat.

As to tone, I can tell you this: the series will get much darker. Edward James Olmos said that it's the darkest series he's ever worked on. I don't think he's talking about the time the power went out on the bridge.

In other Battlestar news, Sci-Fi Network has begun work on a spin-off called "Caprica". It will be set 50 years before the Cylon wars.

And finally, an easter egg: In Commander Adama's quarters there's a medievil-style painting of a battle scene between Colonial Warriors and old-style Cylons. Look for it on the DVD.

I'll be blogging all my convention experiences on my MySpace page. I'll cross-post on my TreesandThing's Diary.

My turn. Hello people. I'd like to thank the acadamy for this great honor.

Plastards should remember me as Logan, King of the Quicklink. My real name is Logan Hawkes. I joined Plastic on the first day, having seen the plug on Suck.com. Over 5 years I earned over 1200 karma. In meatspace, I'm a Quality Engineer in Silicon Valley. In my former life I was a DJ in Eugene, Oregon. For more details, here's my page on MySpace.

I've got extensive perl skill, so I'll be contributing some code (time permitting). My philosophy for the running of TnT will be one of openness and respect, and a healthy suspicion of tradition. Avante-garde submissions are to be encouraged, as long as they make sense. I hope to make TnT a welcoming place and avoid as much of the negativity that surfaced on Plastic. Finally, I hope to make TnT a place that covers a wide variety of topics, not just Politics and some other stuff on the side maybe if we feel like it try again tomorrow.

Finally, I plan to address the most valid complaint about Plastic: transparancy. I propose regular formal reports by the board on the state of TnT and regular meta-discussions. If we have to take the site down for maintainance, I will endeavor to provide information as to what's going on. I promise not to leave you hanging.

Let's get into trouble, baby!
