Brits: As The USA Stands Up, We Will Stand Down

As the public in the United States of America debates the latest plan by President Bush to add over 20,000 troops to the current amount in Iraq, America's closest ally will soon do the opposite.

In what would be a 37% drop in British boots on the ground in the south of Iraq, Prime Minster Tony Blair is expected to announce in the waning days of his term that British staffing in the region will fall to 4500. This comes with the expectation that the day to day responsibility for security operations in the Basra region will be handed over to Iraqis authorities.

UK government officials point out that the British army has had an easier time keeping things under control in the South. Rehabilitation of infrastructure is progressing, and infiltration of the police and army by rogue militia members is being kept to a minimum, unlike in American controlled zones.

Some government ministers also worry that the US "surge" may also have the unintended consequence of worsening violence in UK controlled areas.

5.00 (interesting, interesting)

(and influenced by whiskey and tequilla.   God Bless America!)

LETTER TO AMERICAN MILITARY PERSONNEL:

Thank you for signing up for the military!  I never served,  but both of my parents did, and I was born to a woman who was on active duty---fine, it was the Carter administration, so we weren't fighting anyone yet losing to the Ruskies, but still--I'm from a military family and I sincerely appreciate your work, your duty, your patriotism, and the sacrifice you are making to protect my hippie ass.

I'd like to express my sympathy and empathy towards your impending death, or the impending death of one of your close friends---you see, I respect General Petraeus and I've even read some of his analysis---however,  I don't believe that his ideas are being properly executed--I instead feel that you are being sent into a deathtrap for profit.  I feel that this (once good-intentioned) war has morphed into a profit game whose sole benefits go to the stockholders of the "military-industrial complex" that General and President Eisenhower warned us about.    Every  American who dies in Iraq is (by proxy) generating profit for privately-held American companies, and it so happens that the President and Vice-President of the United States of America are among those stockholders.  Therefore,  every day that this war continues is a day that creates more profits for the leaders of the United States' government--and every day that those two men don't get the United States out of the war is a day that they cynically reap profit with the blood of innocent American soldiers and "collateral" Iraqi civilians.

I personally have no fear whatsoever that any Iraqis will travel to the United States in order to commit terrorism.   I am concerned about pissed off Saudi Arabians and pissed off Pakistanis,  and since their governments have a policy and education system that is designed to inflame their anger, I'm all the more concerned.     But since the United States can do business with Pakistan and Saudi Arabia,  this government won't address their role as the source of Sunni terrorism against the West.   So I guess I'll have to be happy with the American soldiers'  role as cannon fodder for stock profit.

Again, thanks for signing up, and thanks for taking fire.      Sorry that my opinion about which Muslims you should shoot differs with your orders---but if you happen to be in an influential position vis a vis strategy,  please advise that the next war be conducted against some country who is actually fucking with America.
