Noose = Hangin' Offense?

pO157.

In the wake of the Jena 6 case, there have been multiple reports of nooses being put up in isolates incidents across the country. One lawmaker in New York State is trying to change this by making it a felony to display this symbol.

The State Senate passed a bill proposed by Senator Dean Skelos (R) which would make it a felony to display a noose in a threatening manner. The representative introduced the bill in response to recent displays of the knot in his home area reported in mass media. Mr. Skelos said "We won't tolerate this. There is no place for racism and intimidation in America." The new crime would be classified as an "E" Felony, bringing a possible sentence ranging from no jail time to 2-4 years in prison.

This is not the only amendment in NY making specific racist acts a felony. In 2006 the law was amended to make burning a cross or displaying a nazi swastika a felony as well.

Hey, what about the professor at Columbia University who reported a noose hanging on her office door? There was all kinds of "outrage" when it was first reported, but at this point does anyone think anyone other than the professor is responsible for it?

The Jena nooses were a hoax as well, in the sense that they weren't put up as some sort of racial intimidation message but were a prank related to the schools rodeo team. Even though the school and the FBI investigations confirmed the innocent nature of the nooses, the students were punished anyway out of concerns that if they weren't blacks would be upset.

Looking to see if there was any new news on the Columbia thing, I found out that Stanley Crouch doesn't trust college students.

I'm on your side on this one. US News and World report did a big story on faked hate crimes on college campuses a few years back. When it comes to "Hate Crimes" on college campuses, it's pretty 50-50 on whether they're real or a victim complex driven hoax. In the real world, I don't think this ratio comes anywhere near to holding up but on college campuses, it's a different story and I'm sure we all have well held guesses as to why.

It is easy to buy small plaster models of what you think life is like.

We can make some guesses in this case.

Not sure what you're getting at, actually. Because she's in the Ivy League? Because she's a college prof in general? A psych prof in particular? I hope it's not because she's black since almost half the hoax perpetrators in the US News piece were actually white people who faked an attack on themselves, the reasoning being that other racist white people had attacked them for opposing racism.

4.00 (interesting)

He's probably giggling over the phrase "Racial Microaggressions".

It's the end of the world as we know it, and I feel fine

I thought the White Racial Identity Dyadic Interactions in Supervision: Implications for Supervisees' Multicultural Counseling Competence title was much funnier, actually.

Does anybody else find it weird that the media keeps using phrases like "X Number of Nooses Found Today" as if it was some kind of systemic problem created by an underground fringe group?

Because something like this is obviously the result of the situation in Jena and not isolated incidents from ignorant people that has been happening in the background for years and probably will still be happening years from now.

Spread it on!

I'd hardly be so quick to assume that. As for the rest of your point, the media likes to count shit as doing so makes for great graphics.

Which part? That it has been going on in the past, will be going on in the future, or is these incidents are the work of morons whose sense of humor is warped?

Spread it on!

What about the hoax nooses? Wouldn't you suppose those would increase after a well-publicized story like Jena?
