Nudge, Nudge, Wink, Wink, Say No More

What is it with winking?  It's a universal gesture, even though it means different things in different cultures.  It can be flirty.  It can be complicitous.  It can be a simple yet silent acknowledgment.  It can be friendly.  It can be dirty.  It is used by politicians and priests. It is used by men and women.  Some children have no problem winking -  other children have to practice. Alot.

In China it's rude.  In Nigeria, it means children must leave the room.

Talking about winking has a different meaning than actual winking.

And, of course, using the wink icon on the internet means you're an idiot.  The person who typed the icon, that is.

Some people use the wink gesture a lot.  Other people, rarely.  Animals wink, but does it mean something other than they have something in their eye?

So, tell us your story.  Have you ever been truly shocked by a wink?  Did you ever receive a wink that you'll never forget for the rest of your life?  Are you one of those people who seem to wink all the time? And if you are, can you stop, please?

5.00 (interesting, funny, funny)

Well, here's one story.

I used to work in music publishing, and attended the twice yearly boozefest known as NAMM.

One year I served as industry rep to the American Association of Music Teachers.  That year the president of that august association was a southern belle of a woman, probably in her early 70s, yet tall, elegant, well dressed, and with a true lady-like manner that just set you at ease.  I can't remember her name, so I'll call her Linda.

The AMT had their traditional reception at a swanky hotel in Chicago.  I was speaking with Linda, and during the conversation she would occasionally give me what seemed to be a "knowing" wink - that is, it was almost part of the conversation.  I generally don't wink, except under certain circumstances which I might go into on another comment.  So the conversation continued with the occasional wink from her.  It was time to refill my drink, so I excused myself, grabbed another drink and circulated.

When the reception was drawing to a close, Linda wanted a meeting with all the industry reps - there were about 7 of us - 2 women and 5 men.  For whatever reason, we found ourselves standing in a line facing her.  Wanting to break what seemed to be a bit of an unconscious formality, I moved away from the rep group a bit, at stood at a bit of an angle so I could see both Linda and the other reps.

Anyway, Linda spoke to the group and then it happened - she gave them all a wink.  And all 6 of the people standing in front of her winked back in unison.

Had I been older, I would probably have asked her about that.  My take was that this was an innocent, harmless little control game she played.  But the image of those business-hungry reps all winking in unison thinking that the wink was meant just for them was priceless.

4.00 (funny)

I don't think I have ever been winked at...at least not seriously.  I have recieved (and given) tons of those joke winks.  None have been serious though.

I do have one question.  What the hell is up with Wink Martindale?

It's the end of the world as we know it, and I feel fine

But according to some folks, he's been really busy.
