Colts Beat Bears, 29-17

Most of you probably watched Super Bowl XLI. If not for the game, then for the ads, or to watch Prince do the halftime show, or just to have an excuse for a party.

A touchdown on the first play! Six turnovers in the first half! Two black coaches in the Super Bowl! A suggestive Prince silhouette! A missed extra point! Rain! A sleazy ad for a sales lead service presented unironically! Several other ads presented ironically! The Bears' own running game used against them! Fan-submitted superbowl commercials! Critical timeouts lost on referee challenges! No clock control in the final minutes! Drunk people spraying salsa as they scream at their televisions across over the nation! Other stuff I won't mention, because if you care about the topic, you probably saw it too!

So let's talk about it.

...where a black head coach can lose the Super Bowl because his white QB sucks.

The press here in Chicago are surprised Grossman didn't win the MVP - for the Colts.

Best commercial? Nationwide's K-fed spot.

Worst commercial? That hair color one. Too long, didn't make sense, and who the fuck advertises hair color products (for women!) during the Super Bowl?

Best play? Devin Hester running the opening kickoff back for a touchdown - if it hadn't been for that, the game would have been over by halftime.

Worst play? Grossman dropping the snap right after the Bears got the ball off of a Colts fumble. That series, in my mind, is what really broke the Bear's back.

Most underrated player? Joseph Addai. He ran right through the Bears on multiple occasions, caught a lot of key short yardage passes to keep drives going, and he's a ROOKIE. If he hadn't made that one fumble in the first quarter, he'd be my candidate for MVP.

Most overrated player? Payton Manning. He played a smart game for the most part (other than that first half interception, which there was no excuse for), but he didn't appear to be doing a lot of on the line playcalling (and indeed, he often looked pissed off that Tom Moore wasn't letting him throw more), and most of his passes were short checkdowns - smart plays, but not throws that require a lot of skill. He was certainly a key part of their game, but he was no more deserving than any number of players on the Colt's offense.

Finishing up with a random aside - don't Super Bowl parties suck when you actually want to watch the game? My wife and I went to a friend's house, and he had over about a dozen other people, most of which had little serious interest in the game. We sat next to the TV and tried to tune everyone else out, but we still missed a lot of plays due to distraction / background noise /etc. Next year, definitely staying home.

We had 14 people crammed into my living room, and we were all glued to the set.  But then again, as Chicagoans, we had a horse in this race.  At most other Superbowl parties I've been to nobody much cared about the game, but then again, neither did I.

But hey, but how about Prince's naughty phallic silhouette?  Nice.  The mainstream media seem to be leaving it alone.  Or perhaps I just have a dirty mind.

You know I didn't even think of that, I just thought it was a cool silhouette of Prince with his symbol guitar.  I thought Prince's performance was fantastic.

Rex Grossman was pathetic.  He did not belong in the game.  Lovie Smith deserved to lose for keeping him in the game.  At halftime the Bears still had a chance to win the game.  But not with Rex.

Loved watching Hester start off the game with a TD.  If the Bears had even an average QB, a Trent Dilfer or something, they would have won.

Yes, Grossman was terrible, but the Bear's defense didn't show up either.  We've had several games this season that were won on defense alone.  Not to say that would have been the case against the Colts if the defense had shown up, but at least we would have had a fighting chance.

Oh I disagree.  The Bears defense did show up.  They caused many turnovers in the first half and kept the game close.  But they were on the field the whole game because of Rex Grossmans crappiness.  Any defense would have been spent against that tough, fast Colts offense.

I have no complaints about teh Bears defense in the Superbowl.  They did their part, if Grossman could have had 2 sustained drives to give them a breather, they may have had a chance to win that game.

Yeah, the Bears were totally in that game. Both INTs weren't just regular pick offs, they were Rex Grossman super special crappiness. Even the fumbles would have been forgiven if he could have put either one of those passes somewhere other than the absolute worst place possible. His excuse on the one that got returned for a TD was classic Grossman. "I was just trying to put it up somewhere that the receiver could make a play on it." Oh really? Maybe you could have tried to put it somewhere near where the receiver could have tried to make a play on it then? The offensive play calling wasn't fantastic for the Bears in the fourth quarter either. It would go 15 yard run for Thomas Jones, 8 yard run for Thomas Jones, let Grossman throw a pic. The Colts weren't stopping the run so it was a little bewildering why they were letting Grossman throw it anyway, all the way up until the Sanders pic.

Best commercial? Nationwide's K-fed spot.

Personally, I liked the Blockbuster ad with the animals dragging and clicking the the "mouse" and I also like the winning amateur video for Doritos dubbed  "Cheesy". Anyone who missed an ad or two can go here and scroll through the offerings.

Last night was the first time that I can ever remember being at a Super Bowl party where everyone was rooting for the same team - the Colts. A couple of collective groans went up when the Bears scored early, but I knew Grossman would fuck up badly enough during any oncoming offensive maneuvers that it wouldn't matter in the end. In fact, I'm amazed that the Bears were able to get as far along as they did with such an, an... underwhelming (a charitable characterization, methinks) QB.

None of the commercials deserved a "best of" this year. Nobody seriously tried except maybe the car commercial about the assembly line robot committing suicide. Kinda like the game. With all those awful turnovers on both sides, aside from maybe Joseph Addai, nobody really tried to win the game. Rex Grossman was just best at committing football suicide.

Unfortunately, they had to settle for Rex "I Know I Can Fit This Pass To My Receiver Covered By Three Defensive Backs" Grossman.  Therein lies the tale of this game.  When the Colts had the ball, they played sharp and smart.  In the odd circumstance that the Bears had the ball, they didn't.  How does a starting QB fumble two snaps from the same center who had been snapping him the ball the entire season?  Don't tell me the weather was a factor in that because it seemed that Manning and Saturday had no problem.

If Chicago is smart, they'll get rid of Grossman and hire up one of the seasoned free agents who offer their services this year.  As much as it pains me as an Eagles fan to think about it, a Jeff Garcia would be a nice fit for a Bears team that looks like it has a chance to get back to the Super Bowl whenever they decide to upgrade their QB position.  Also, if Chicago is smart, they will resign Lovie Smith to a nice long extension.

Illegitimi non carborundum.
