Madden Curse Announces Next Victim

As the annual NFL draft approaches, the "off" season for America's favorite sport reaches its apex. To capitalize on the inherent buzz, Electronic Arts also takes this opportunity to announce the player featured on the latest annual edition of the #1 video game in America, EA Sports' Madden series.

It has been a busy and very public off-season thus far for the NFL. Two teams that are annually competitive but fell short last season were especially busy -- both the New England Patriots and Philadelphia Eagles acquired All-Pro linebackers and speedy wide receivers to bolster their already stacked rosters. The Oakland Raiders look to do the same for their thin reserves with the number one pick in the upcoming draft. Most pundits believe the Raiders are internally debating whether to take man-child receiver Calvin Johnson or the cannon-armed JaMarcus Russell.

The major story of the off-season for the NFL, though, has been off the field violence involving its players. The year opened with the tragic New Years shooting death of Denver Bronco Darrent Williams. Perhaps in response, new commissioner Roger Goodell suspended for the season one of his league's own trouble makers, the fleet footed Pacman "Make It Rain" Jones. Chris Henry of the oft-arrested Cincinnati Bengals was also made an example of with a half-season suspension.

The one story that may yet have the biggest impact on the upcoming season, though, is EA's announcement. This is because ever since EA began putting players on the cover of the Madden video game, the player on the cover has been seriously injured or otherwise underperformed that season. This season's victim is rookie sensation Vince Young. As Young is a running quarterback who endured several close calls last season, it is not a stretch to think that the Madden Curse will live on.

Brett...

5.00 (astute)

...you have my eternal respect.  You gave me some unexpected pride in my home team, and I'll always remember you for that.  Please don't play this whole season.  You've always been inconsistent, but there was a time when this kind of thing happened a lot more often than it has in the past two years.  There have been some rumors that you want Randy Moss to join the Pack.  Brett, the current receivers are not the problem here, the problem is what happens between the snap and the release.  Maybe you've gotten old, maybe you've gotten slow, I don't now, but it pains me to see you out there in the backfield, running the wrong way before (hopefully) grounding the ball to end yet another drive.  Brett, when I'm looking at you, I'm thinking "it's Don Majkowski again", and I'm not thinking that in the good way.

But I'll make you a deal, Brett.  You don't have to totally quit this season.  It's a shame to bow out when you're so close to topping Elway and Marino, so you can keep starting for the 3-4 games it will take you to beat their records.  But then you have to start letting Bouman play.  Maybe let him be the starter for the second half, or something else to ease him into it.  Just...please...stop being an embarrassment for us all.  I'm still planning to cry when they hoist your name up on the ring around Lambeau Field.  Don't make it an excuse to chuck my beer at you instead.

Sincerely,

Wisconsin

Favre didn't have half as bad a year in '06 as he did in '05 and I think that goes to demonstrate that it's the supporting cast as much as it is him. You're right in that the receivers don't suck but they're also not the calliber of Antonio Freeman, Robert Brooks, Sterling Sharpe or Jevon Walker. He's also been used to having much, much better defenses. Up until the 4th and 26 playoff loss to Philly, they had consistently for about a decade one of the best defenses around. The compensating for lack of a defense, special teams or running game is what has really cause Favre to try to overcompensate on top of his well-known gunslinger attitude. Get Favre a defensive and/or Adrian Peterson and you'll see a "resurgence" in his game.

Love Brett Favre.  He will go down in history as one of the best improvisators to ever play quarterback.  But really, his career has gone on a few years longer than it should have.  It is like watching Evander Holyfield fight.  You'r ethinking "what is he still doing out there?"  Someone needs to tell him when it is time to move on and begin a new life.

You cannot help the Packers anymore Brett.  Your presence only hinders the development of Aaron Rodgers.  Go away Brett Favre.  Don't worry, we love you and we will honor you in the NFL hall of fame.  But don't hold back the team that made yuo great.

The guy was such a perfect fit for the Pack. They built one another's mystique in ways that I don't think another franchise or another player could have. I'm somewhat surprised he only ever won the one Super Bowl but the defense during the Mike Sherman era was such a waste of Favre's final quality years.

Draft

In years past the draft has been an open and shut case with the #1 pick already in contract negotiations with their new team at this point. Last season, we all thought it was open and shut until the Texas created all that drama by passing on two impact offensive players for a still questionable defensive guy.

The top of the draft this year is as intriguing as its ever been maybe this decade, though. The most recent one that was this up in the air that I can think of off the top of my head was the McNabb/Culpepper/Ricky Williams draft. Everybody seems to think Calvin Johnson is the top guy but you gotta think putting JaMarcus Russell with Randy Moss and the other talented Raider receivers would be like pairing them with a young Culpepper again. Instant excitement.

#2 of course you have the infuriating Team Millen that is going straight down the tubes with Ford Motor Company. If luck strikes and Johnson falls into their lap, they just HAVE to capitalize on it by getting an extra pick or two. Everyone is assuming Gruden is salivating over Johnson at #4 but he's gotta realize his defense is slipping, too.

I'd genuinely like to see the Browns not screw up the #3 pick. Personally, I think Adrian Peterson would authomatically make them a 9 win team but is that enough to save Romeo's job? It's rough spot to be in -- take a QB and maybe you can buy yourself some more time to develop him? Because if you go with the immediate impact RB and still don't make the playoffs, I'm pretty sure the Crennell staff will get (somewhat unfairly, imho) canned.

I'm honestly concerned for VInce Young. The Madden Curse has been nothing but consistent and he's a promising player. The one thing he has going for him is that no one has ever been put on the cover this early in their career. Everyone else was on the downside of their career and due for injuries except the other running QB's who have been on the cover. The guy is exciting as hell to watch -- more so than Vick as far as I'm concerned -- and with Make It Rain out already, the Titans really need him.

JaMarcus Russell should go first.  No doubt.  The Raiders are in a sorry state, and usually the first pick overall doesn't truly pan out.  Teams that draft for need are usually pretty desperate.

A great quarterback can go a LONG way to saving a franchise.  Look at Drew Bledsoe, he marked a turning point for the Patriots.  Look at Carson Palmer, a turnaround for the Bengals.

I am not worried about Vince Young.  He reminds me of a SMARTER Ben Roethlisburger.  (Funny I should say that, as it was widely publicized a year ago that Vince Young's biggest problem was that he wasn't too smart.)  Big Ben was just plain stupid to ride around with no helmet and squash his melon.  Vince Young is turning out to be a guy who can silence his critics and play great football.  I think the "Madden curse" is a bunch of hogwash.  Vince Young will not get seriously injured this season.

Calvin Johnson has the skill set to be another Terrell Owens (minus the head case).  Whoever ends up drafting him is going to rock.  (I'm guessing it will be Cleveland Browns.)

Rumor has it that Ladanian Tomlinson passed on the chance to be on the Madden cover because of the curse. Young and his agent have brazenly scoffed at the notion, mentioning that VY won the NCAA championship game despite gracing the cover of SI.
