French President Elect, Nicolas Sarkozy, holidayed on a luxury yacht in the Mediterranean on Tuesday as his opponents - largely dissaffected youth and immigrant minorities rioted in the streets for a second straight day following his electoral victory on Sunday.
Sarkozy has been a controversial figure in France - although his electoral victory seems to have come in large part from his pledge to right the reeling French economy (a conclusion supported by the unexpectedly strong support he received from women and blue collar workers), opponents fear that he will take a tough stance towards France's immigrant population and disembowel the impressive social welfare protection regime that the French have enjoyed for decades. Reaction to his election has been mixed, with a general consensus that "Sarko" has a huge task ahead of him.
Most intriguingly for those interested in international relations, Sarkozy has pledged to repair France's damaged relations with the US. This stance already has some wondering about the future of the EU, its relations with Russia (a recent French ally against the US in many diplomatic negotiations), and what effect, if any, this might have on the Iraq War and the War on Terror.
