Band On The Run: Life -Vs- Life On The Road

While groups like the My Morning Jacket, Kings of Leon, Band of Horses and Midlake have received critical acclaim as great new Americana/roots rock/alt-country/ (insert your favorite label here) bands and have consequently gained national followings, Two Cow Garage has been almost completely ignored, and I can't for the life of me figure out why.

The above scenario plays out all over the world; somewhere, everywhere, there's a band talented enough to attain greatness and acclaim, but is still unable to reach that damn brass ring dangling right before their eyes. How does if affect their lives, this unquantifiable quest for recognition?

Struggling musicians are a dime a dozen, of course, but how many times can a band or artist climb partially up the mountain only to be continually knocked right back to the bottom in a split second? The folks at Glorious Noise have been ardent fans of Two Cow Garage for a few years now, and their current chronicle of the band's journey makes for some compelling reading. Even more fascinating is the two-part video documentary of sorts in which the band details what life's like when faced with the choice to push on as struggling artists or return to real world jobs which may offer some stability, if not scads of money.

Here's part 1:

Here's part 2:

As I noted at the beginning, this is in no way a unique situation, and although the Web and its vast information disseminating capabilities can help bands reach an audience, the overwhelming numbers of other musicians also shilling on the 'Net are in some ways an equalizer, as similar-sounding bands may siphon off potential listeners from the target audience. So now that you've read the articles, watched the videos, and downloaded some of their tunes, how's about gazing into your crystal ball and predicting what's in store for the band in the future. And while you're at it, why not tell us about bands close to you geographically that are in similar situations, and could make it big if given the right combination of luck and talent.

Falling through the cracks

Two Cow Garage is very good band, but maybe not a great band. Not that you have to be great to have success in the music industry as history is littered with bands and artists that weren't even close to being great, but for whatever reason, just happened to catch lightning in a bottle...
These guys are definitely good enough to sell a pretty fair number of records and it is surprising that they're not signed with an indie label at the very least. Indie labels are usually the starting point for a band of this kind and are usually good at the niche marketing skills necessary to reach an audience that's in tune for TCG's brand of rock. They seem to have fallen through one of the many the cracks that the modern musical landscape now presents. No matter how good a band is, there's almost always an element of luck in whether they can make it to another level. There is so much music available these days that it's impossible to keep up with every good band that comes along no matter how deserving of attention they may be. These guys seem to have gotten stuck in that nebulous area between fairly well-known and might've heard-about... a fate which is bestowed upon thousands of bands. They've definitely got the talent to sell some records, but so far they've been coming up snake eyes on lucky break end of the deal. Hopefully they'll keep persevering 'cuz their music is good - there's a song titled "Should've California"  that encapsulates the struggling artist meme very well. It's freely and legally available from the Glo No article and their website (both linked in the w/up) or you can grab it here. Should've California
I've previewed the album at Amazon and will probably purchase it as a full album download as it's chock full of gritty, tuneful rock that seems suited to playing at loud volumes in the car with the windows down...

Somewhere in my soul, there's always Rock -n- Roll... Joe Strummer

The bass player kinda reminds me of Tom Waits.

I know the guy that co-created this band.  All is well except for one thing...he "hates music".  It's just a job for him (as well as two others...one playing in an acoustic duo and the other -get this- teaching music as a local community college).  I asked him why he did it if he hates it so much.  His reply was, "because I hate being poor".

Now, don't get me wrong...I have no beef with what anyone does for a living.  It just doesn't seem right where Two Cow Garage seems to pour their souls into the music and the lead signer is applying for a job at Wendy's while Rare Form (although talented and hardworking) checks their souls at the door when they show up for "work".   Ah well...as least in RF's videos it looks like they're having fun.  That counts for something.

It's the end of the world as we know it, and I feel fine

The reason they haven't made it to the top is that they haven't hit the bottom yet.  Pay dem dues, you know?  So if they sell off one of them cows and become a one cow garage, I'm betting they get a hit record within 2 years.  Unless they sell their souls to the devil, in which case that time is cut in half.

Don't they know the basics of becomeing a rock star?  Jeesh.  Amateurs.

I dunno...being in your mid-20s and applying for a job at Wendy's seems to be pretty close to rock bottom to me.
