Rode my motorcycle from Portland, Oregon to Lewiston and Orofino, Idaho and back in the past five days.

Holy crap! Now I know why people spend $600 on motorcycle seats. Cruise control probably helps with that sore wrist, too. Hand guards do well to shield a lot of the cold from your hands, and I wasn't in dire need of grip-warmers in the 40F-50F weather.

Fuel efficiency appeared to be more of a factor of speed rather than load on my Suzuki DL650 V-Strom. I got about 40 mpg at the worst, and 55 mpg at best. The whole round trip cost me about $60 in gasoline.

That's got to be some scenic country.  Did you take any pictures and are you posting them anywhere.  Glad you made it back safe and sound.

I have family up in Idaho, so it's a route I take quite often. Except this time I screwed up and accidentally took the wrong highway for a part of it, and got a very scenic view of Mt. Adams. I had a camera with me, but I didn't take any pictures. I do have some scenic pictures online at a few places, but none that are consolidated or public. I should change that. If I go back to Idaho when it's warmer, I'll be able to pack lighter clothes and take my new camera with me.

and ask about the route you took-- did you head up the Gorge, and go through Goldendale and Yakima, or did you keep going through the Tri-Cities area? I've been on that route many times (lived in Ellensburg for 14 years), but don't know much about the routes in the southeast region. If you took a motorcycle through Satus Pass this time of year, you've got a lot of guts, at least from what I've noted in passing on the Weather Channel. Safer than Snoqualmie, to be sure, but still, not what I think of as motorcycle country in March.
The Washington side of the Gorge must be a great motorcycle trip, at least if the traffic isn't too bad. Are the roads well maintained out by Spokane and the border? There's pretty rough weather out there, and I could see it being a bit dicey at times.

Yeah, I'm a little homesick. Sue me :)

On the way over, I ended up missing the turn-off to stay on Highway 14, and ended up on Highway 97 through Goldendale and Toppenish to Yakima. It was the coldest part of the trip, even colder than the Pomeroy (Alpowa) Grade. From Yakima, I took I-82 East to Highway 12, and on my way to Orofino. Spokane would be too far north, though I did take a meandering route through there years ago. My intended route (and the one I took in reverse on my way back) was 14 to I-82 to 730 to 12.

Highway 14 is nice because you can take your time, and take in the view. Plus it doesn't block your satellite radio reception if you're in a car. The roads are all good nowadays. The traditional route my family here takes to visit the family in Idaho has been I-84 (or what was I-80 when I was born) to 730 to 12. Other than a close-up view of various falls as you whiz by, the gorge part of the trip isn't too interesting, and there are too damn many rigs with triple-trailers to negotiate.

I didn't have so much guts to take that pass as much as I didn't realize I was taking a mountain pass; I knew I'd come across I-82 eventually, and figured a new view might be okay. Luckily the highway was dry the whole way. Highway 14 did have a lot of motorcycles going in both directions. I was alone on 97 except for one fellow that turned off before the pass. I just checked out the satellite view of the highway on Google, and realized how damn lucky I was (though I would've turned right around if I saw snow or ice on the road).

You don't want to know how much cabo san lucas cost me. All the prices were Americanized, no one speaks spanish anymore and my favorite sports bar closed.

You're right, we probably don't.

When you say the prices were Americanized, do you mean they were higher than you remember them?

I mean both that they were higher than I remembered them and also that they were the same as if I had still been in Los Angeles. Prices that had been $4 or 40 pesos were now $8 or 80 pesos. I suppose some of that could have been due to the depreciating dollar but you could tell a lot of it was also from the much larger number of Americans coming in the past several years as opposed to previously.

When I was there (same time of year) 4 years ago, you had two types of Americans--middle aged expats into fishing and west coast college crowd. This time, there were Los Angeles style bars full of new money Mexicans and a shitloads of Texans. They also had massive new development on the marina that made it look like it was a mall in Orange County.

That's some chilly riding.

I rode a Kawasaki EX500 17000 miles in three months a long time ago...I learned that the key to comfort was seat height, and simply putting my sleeping bag on the seat let me ride from one gas stop to another (250 miles or so) without stopping.  Previous to that discovery, I had to stop and walk around every 100 miles or so.  The inch and a half of height the bag gave me was all it took.

There's no better way to see the country.  You are really in the scenery, rather than looking at it through the frame of a windshield.

I'd love to do it again with the benefit of a GPS.  I crossed the southeast by drawing a line on a map from Houston to Asheville, and then marking all the highways closest to it.  Every morning before I started I would go over the map and note every junction on a notepad that I stuck onto my tank, but the highway signs weren't always there, and I often had to guess, and when I guessed wrong I'd have to stop and figure it all out again.  Last year my girlfriend and I followed a GPS from DC to Niagara and back and saw the back country of Pennsylvania and New York.  I only wish we could have rented a motorcycle instead of the Pontiac we got stuck with.

Wow. I have not been to Idaho in years, but Orofino in March? That must have been freezing ass cold.

Have you considered applying for the Iron butt award? I'm not sure your trip meets the mileage threshhold but if I rode a motorcycle I'd probably make getting one a life goal.

Dang, I thought I qualified, but Mapquest says it was only 919 miles.

5.00 (funny)

Of course you did. Don't you remember dropping your wallet at Heavy Hildegard's Truckstop in Medford, Oregon and making it almost to Redding, CA then realizing you had to turn around to reclaim your property? After which, of course, you continued the rest of the way.

5.00 (brilliant)

Maybe I can get credit for driving around and around the parking lot at IHOP for two hours, waiting for a space that was visible from inside.

The weather actually was warmer than unusual. Since I didn't do the 1000 or so miles in 24 hours, I don't qualify for the iron butt.
