In move largely ignored by the mainstream American media, Wal Mart has elected not to carry any milk with artificial growth hormones. The move is seen as something of a tipping point within the industry given Wal Mart's immense size and market influence.

Wal Mart is not only the largest retailer in America but also the country's largest purveyor of organic foods.

4.00 (informative)

I've been buying hormone-free milk for a couple years now, so this is welcome news.  It's definitely more expensive, but after seeing The Corporation and its scenes of what those hormones do to cows (and what ends up in milk as a result), it's a small price to pay.  That and it tastes a million times better too (I can hardly stand to drink the "regular" kind now).

That said, I would be very happy to see the price of organic milk come down.  There's a slow trend in that direction...more and more stores are carrying hormone- and antibiotic-free meat (not just the hippy ones), and it's not that much more expensive.

Q: What do you think of western civilization? Gandhi: I think it would be a good idea.
