Doctor: Data...Data...what's the difference?
Data: One is my name and the other is not.

Neither if I understand your phonetic spellings correctly.

I say "da' tuh" with the "a" as in "bag" or "cat".

Mebbe it's a Southern Thang. I dunno.

I pronounce it both ways, the same way I do the word nuclear. Hurray for traveling about.

Me too, but not nuclear.  I never thought about it before, but I say both.

To me it's like the word "route." I pronounce it both ways ("oo" and "ow") but each has slightly different uses and meanings.

Yeah.  It's like 'root' in route 66, and like 'out' in circuitous route.

Actually, I think the only time I consistently use the "out" is in relation to football, as in a wide receiver runs a 15-yard post r"ow"t but I take r"oo"t 130 to get to the Cherry Hill Mall.

2: dig with the snout; "the pig was rooting for truffles" [syn:
         root, rootle]
3: make a groove in [syn: gouge, groove]
4: defeat disastrously [syn: spread-eagle, spreadeagle]

Yeah, I was too preoccupied with the pronunciation bit and left the "e" off the end of those. What really gets me, though, are the "melk" and "pellow" pronouncers.
