California's get tough on communism initiative paid big dividends recently when a Cal State Fullerton professor was let go for failing to take a loyalty oath. The 38 year old Quaker offered to sign the oath if she were allowed to attach a personal statement expressing her beliefs as a pacifist.

She was denied that request but another professor at the same school was fired in February for inserting the word "non-violently" into the oath. Quaker math teacher Marianne Kearney-Brown was quickly re-hired after media attention in that case. All public employees in California are required to sign the oath, although non-citizen public employees are dubiously exempted. The office of Atty. Gen. Jerry Brown has released a statement declaring that the oath does not commit employees to bear arms.

4.00 (interesting)

I"ve been following this story for a while now. It's clear that Cal State was way out of line in the decision to fire Kearney-Brown. Neither of the two changes she made to the oath form (the second was to take a sentence which included "swear/affirm," cross out the "swear" and circle "affirm") altered the meaning or interpretation of the oath.
