TnT Celebrates 2 Year Anniversary, Nobody Notices?

Two years and two days ago (as of the writing of this story) Treesandthings.com went live as a discussion site.

The first story we discussed back then was the assassination of Abu Musab al-Zarqawi. Since then we've covered the 2006 U.S. mid-term elections, the surge, the 2008 presidential campaign, and hundreds of other stories in topics such as law, music, science, food, and many more. We've accumulated over 700 user accounts and almost doubled our traffic. The Boad of Directors and developers have moved forward with new features and worked towards finally establishing the site as a non-profit organization. Despite Plastic's rise from the grave and some of our own troubles, we persist.

There can be more than one!

5.00 (interesting)

Congratulations and thank you to TnT and to all of those people whose time and effort have made it into what it is.  IMO this continues to be a worthwhile project and one of my favorite places on the internet.  That a certain amount of tension exists between this site and Plastic is somewhat understandable given the genesis of TnT and the fact that some folks simply can not experience 2 separate but similar things without comparing them/framing them in terms of competition.  This isn't some Highlander movie and there can be more than one (really it's OK).

From what has transpired since Plastic's 'resurrection' I think TnT was something the shared community desperately needed, a haven from crazed A.I. behavior. IMO Plastic only dies a little more each time some A.I. shit fest and sock puppet mod war erupts - unfortunately that doesn't translate directly into thousands of new participants at TnT.  The posting community may not be as large as Plastic in it's golden age but it is consistent and more or less civil (or at least unafraid to sometimes be complete assholes under their very own anonymous user name) and that leads to the possibility of community through consistency of interaction.

We persist, but not like a bad fungal infection.

I say bravo! Bravo that we've all been here for so long! Bravo that we've had so much intelligent discussion! Bravo that minds and opinions have been changed. Most importantly, Bravo that two years later we're still apparently in that honeymoon period with little to no snark and lots of respect for the views of others.

I think if we can just double the number of active users this place will really take off.

So will the snark. What establishes this site as being a more civil discussion site is the non-existence of the anonymous account. At least, when there is a disagreement, you can put a name on the person you're disagreeing with. Most of us have managed to try to keep things civil during those disagreements.

Speaking of numbers, could shane update the stats page?

...but I'm very pleased with where we are at this point.  I'd like to see more people post comments and write stories, but all things considered I think we're doing very well.  There were a lot of times during the first year when I really didn't think we'd ever make it this long, so while it may be faint praise I really do think we've done very well just to persist.  The longer we last the more time word of mouth has to bring us more people and the more people we get the more interesting the site gets.

Well said.  I've been overwhelmingly impressed with the level of topics and responses on this site.  Far better than Plastic for me.  I haven't been back to Plastic for probably over a month.  Turned into a rather hateful site.  If the address drops off of my browser list, it would be no loss to me.

Kindest regards,

Skeeter

there's only one way to find out...
