Barbeque - America's 4th of July favorite

The 4th of July is right around the corner.  It commemorates the US release from the British empire, and we celebrate with fireworks.

It's also America's favorite day to cook out.  Barbeque is almost a guaranteed.  There are so many variations.  Smokers are more traditionally used in the South, while grilling is much more common in the North.

With the right tools, you can grill any time, any where.  Over the stove, over the camp stove, over the campfire,  wherever.  Good cookware is expensive, and it lasts a couple of lifetimes.

Steaks?  Always good.  Hamburger? can't go wrong there.  Bratwurst?  Hard to go wrong there, particularly if they're simmered in some good beer.  Knockwurst?  Always good.  Grilled klobasa?  Wonderful!

Add some grilled potatos and onions, and a salad with cucumbers, sour cream, and dill, and I'm going to be happy as a pig in s**t!

What are your 4th of July plans, particularly culinary?

I'm glad to have access to a top shelf grill this holiday...which reminds I should be sure to grab some top shelf liquor to go with it. Is Tequila patriotic enough? The meat department will consist of salmon or perhaps ahi. I'm not sure about the vegetable department but we'll have to come up with a good quinoa and avocado salad I think. fuck I can't wait. My ass is starting thursday afternoon.

It is easy to buy small plaster models of what you think life is like.

"Is Tequila patriotic enough? "

Good enough!  I might crack open one of the bottles of Scotch whisky from the collection.  Is that any less patriotic?  Probably, but who gives a rat's ass.  Few things better on a warm summer day than a good marguerita.  Maybe a Cerveza Bohemia.

The grilled ahi sounds good, but I guess I'm one of the few people who doesn't care for salmon.  Probably going to be bratwurst for me.  My ethnic roots (Bohemian) have instilled a love of sausages in me.  Now, if I had a nice walleye fillet...  that would be good, too.

there's only one way to find out...

I'll probably be grilling something, but I'm not sure what yet...probably some kind of steak, although I'm not sure what yet (whatever's on sale at the grocery store, most likely). In addition to the steak, we'll probably do some baked potatos - I've found this to be an excellent recipe for doing them on the grill.

Ce n'est pas une pipe. C'est une signature.

"I've found this to be an excellent recipe for doing them on the grill."

That's an excellent recipe.  Baked potatoes for me are more of a vehicle for eating sour cream.  I put sour cream on and eat the insides first.  Then I put on more sour cream and slice up the skins.  To me, that's the best part of a baked potato.

Here's another one for you if you haven't made up your mind yet.

Several redskin potatoes quartered with the skins on
1 large sweet onion, coarsely chopped
a couple of sliced bratwurst
salt and pepper to taste

Toss all in a little olive oil, wrap in a packet of aluminum foil, and put on a hot grill for about 1/2hr.

It's also a great "tailgate" meal.

there's only one way to find out...

5.00 (astute)

Sounds good, but I really love small, whole potatoes grilled not in foil (which to me seems more oven-ish) but on skewers, brushed with a little olive oil and seasoned with salt and pepper. Goes well with just about any meat, poultry, or fish, or even just grilled veggies.
