Saudis Cock Blocking Russian-Iranian Love?

Spokesman for Russia Prime Minister Vladimir Putin (wait--doesn't Russia have a new leader?) has denied reports that Moscow is accepting major Saudi arms contracts in exchange for scaling down support of the Iranian regime.

Said Dmitry Peskov:

Military-technical cooperation between Russia and Saudi Arabia has an independent dimension. It is founded on mutual interest and to tie this dimension of cooperation between Russia and Saudi Arabia with any other questions is absolutely not right and not proper.

Nonetheless, Russia and the pre-eminent Middle Eastern power concluded a productive conference this week, with Russia landing at least one US$2.2 Billion arms deal. Total Russian arms exports could eclipse a record US$8 Billion this year. Unsurprisingly for these two quasi-totalitarian oil dependent regimes, oil and security were the key issues. While it continues to insist the nuclear assistance it gives to Iran is for peaceful business, Russia reportedly did acknowledge that Iran's nuclear aspirations are a cause a disturbance to peaceful relations in the region.

This isn't terribly surprising.  It's hard to see Russia and Iran as natural allies.  The two countries have historically been antagonistic, had border disputes, conflicts over ethnic minorities, etc.  Iran is (ironically) arguably somewhat more democratic (although less free in other ways) than Russia is these days.  The main thing tying Russia to Iran is the money - so if some other country is willing to pony up the cash, expect Russia to be willing to play...
