High Fructose Corn Syrup On The Ropes

The Corn Refiners Association is concerned that Americans intake of High Fructose Corn Syrup has dropped by as much as 10% since 2003. This, after a 135% increase over the previous 30 years.

In response, the CRA has launched an 18-month, $20 million plus Ad/PR campaign "to convince consumers that HFCS isn't the evil it has been made out to be." This after the failure of a "grass roots" effort of peddling the benefits of their sugar substitute to nutritionists and doctors. One reason behind the redoubled marketing effort is a $4.8 billion merger of Corn Products International and Bunge Ltd.

Jesus Christ.  They'd make more money selling it as biofuel.

That's exactly why consumption is down.

Even though cane sugar is cheaper than corn syrup worldwide, corn syrup always used to be a lot cheaper than cane sugar in the US, because of the US import duties on cane sugar.  With the ethanol tax driving up corn usage in the US, the price differential has pretty much disappeared.

This tax credit is offset by a nearly equally sized ethanol import duty, and combined with sugar import duties this means that US uses expensive ethanol made from corn instead of using cheaper ethanol made from sugar cane.

My mother in law got an unsourced anonymous mass chain e-mail years ago saying HFCS was the work of the devil and is responsible for all of her ailments!

As she often reminds me, despite all the evidence is to the contrary, if it wasn't so bad why did they name it "High Fructose Corn Syrup?" Because they know it is poison, that's why!

Forget diet, exercise and maybe genetics. HFCS is responsible for everything bad that ever happened to any of us. I am surprised the FDA hasn't taken those who invented it out back and shot them yet.

If it wasn't for chain emails and colloidal silver I'd still be in the clutches of Big Clinical Trial and Big Peer Review.

I'm blue, but at least I'm free.

Actually, they're too corrupt and apathetic to truly be evil. ;)  To be evil they would have to be able to form an independent thought. ;)

The FDA has been a whore for so long they've forgotten how to evaluate studies, so they just OK whatever gets put in front of them.

Eh, fuck 'em ... that stuff is horrible for you, and is a big part of why people are overweight (and sick).

Hopefully now at least companies will tone it down.
