Unfair And Unbalanced - Is That The TV One Model?

When the gavel pounds the opening of the Democratic National Convention in Denver at the end of August, one of the media outlets covering will be TV One. However, when the Republican National Convention opens up in Minneapolis a week later, don't expect to find TV One anywhere near the event.

The reason for this seemingly one-sided affair? According to the cable TV network "programming primarily to African American adults", the Democrats have Obama and the Republicans aren't nominating a black. In short, they believe their audience doesn't care much for what the Republicans are offering.

TV One CEO Johnathan Rodgers calls the candidacy of US Senator Barack Obama (D - IL) a "huge deal ... for the African American community." Rodgers said "African Americans have fallen in love with his candidacy, his family ... we will be covering the democratic convention all the time." Rodgers said the whole point behind the decision to only cover Obama's coronation is that it will be "a celebration" and not coverage of a debate. Not that there would be a debate during the airing of either convention, what happened to the requirement to appear fair in covering politics?

For one thing, that doctrine is a thing of the past. For another, it only applied to broadcast outlets. Besides, Rodgers points out TV One is "not a news organization" -- they're a "television network designed to celebrate African American achievement." As he points out "my audience is 93% black" and that's who he serves.

Brad Trechak from tvsquad.com sees Rodgers' point for limiting TV One's coverage; Obama's ascent represents "pretty much the biggest news story of the century" for the black community. However, he wonders if it's wise to limit coverage to one party when the nominee of the other party might just win the election. Most of those commenting on either the thrfeed.com or tvsquad.com piece went beyond just the advisability of limiting coverage to Obama. Many of them asked how TV One's decision wasn't racism in and of itself? One of them called it an "insult to the many black republicans." While others pointed out that the Fairness Doctrine, such as it was, never applied to cable outlets. For his part Rodgers said if the Democrats had ended up nominating Senator Hillary Clinton "we would not be covering this year's Democratic Convention."

Anyone ever even heard of TV One before this?

I had. They started running Day Break, a short-running TV series starring Taye Diggs, a few months ago. ("It's Groundhog Day as conspiracy thriller, but with cops!") Less than half the thirteen episodes had been aired previously, and for some reason the SciFi channel hadn't picked up the slack, despite the premise being right up their alley.

I remember when Day Break first came out. I'm guessing you'd say it's pretty good?

Good enough for me to watch all 13 episodes. It's not the work of genius Veronica Mars was, but the scripting assumes that both the characters and audience aren't stupid -- which puts it above about 2/3rds of science fictions shows already.

I'm not sure it would have worked well as a multi-year series, but then, it never got that far.

Meh...I can't get worked up about this.  Is TVOne unfair and unbalanced?  Probably.  At least they're not making any claims to the opposite...nor are they hiding the fact why they're not covering the Republican convention.  Meanwhile, Fox news will continue to denigrate the democrats while pumping up the new "Commander and Chief".  They'll be tossing out terrorist fist jabs all the while they report and we decide.

It's the end of the world as we know it, and I feel fine

If TV One's "only Obama" coverage isn't racist, it's awfully damn close. They're focusing on their candidate of choice because of skin color alone, and despite claims to the contrary, the presidential race is a sideshow in comparison to the actual "most important story of the century" to African Americans.

Win or lose, the importance of Obama's campaign is a capstone to the racial-based policies started in the Civil Rights movement. It shows that America has progressed to the point where skin color has become an irrelevant hurdle in the process of achieving the highest office in the land. (Note: process, not politics. Individuals or classes of voters will or won't support a black candidate for a variety of reasons, some of them racially-based; but dark skin is not of itself a disqualifier the way it would have been decades ago.)

The actual most important story of the century is the debate over whether race-based preferences should continue or be done away with. Most of that story will be played out at the local or state level, but the opinions of both presidential candidates on the subject would be very interesting to hear. The failure of TV One to investigate that issue, and the insistence upon ignoring one candidate entirely, speaks volumes about how TV One management sees the issue -- and it doesn't cast a complimentary light on TV One.

Isn't TV One's whole premise is to ignore other races save just one?

On one hand they are a private entity and allowed to do as they wish with their station's broadcast time.

On the other hand, I wonder if they thought the PR of this through. Are they really suggesting that all their viewing audience cares about is the skin color of the speaker? If I was Obama I am not sure I would want to be associated with that type of support. I would want people behind me because they believed in my platform and ideas for the country, not because of my outward appearance.

From what I can tell, even though the network has a little financial backing, it doesn't seem as if it has the revenue to cover anything but a slam bang viewing event: the schedule I saw on the site is a definitely low budget collection of syndicated shows that weren't exactly big news when they were new. The big question Rodgers might get from shareholders will likely be why he's spending money covering an already well televised event, and not so much why the Republicans didn't get equal coverage. Will TV One get more advertising as a result? Is Rodgers angling for some bad publicity, just to get any publicity at all? (TV One looks as if it has a noticeable presence in around fifteen states, and isn't even broadcast in around six or seven.) At first glance, this looks a lot more like a calculated gamble than any indication of deep seated racism . . though doubtless I don't own the special glasses that let me catch all the bias in this instance.
