Is It Hearts and Flowers Yet?

Ever since Hillary Clinton dropped out of the Democratic nomination race, there have been rumors of hard feelings between the Clinton camp and the Obama camp. Hillary hasn't done any active campaigning for Obama since she suspended her own campaign, and the rumors have also been fueled by the low profile Bill has taken, including a very terse semi-endorsement in June. Last Tuesday, in a typically ambiguous interview with ABC's Kate Snow, President Clinton not only damned Obama with faint praise ("I never said he wasn't qualified. The constitution sets qualification for the president.") but followed it with some more positive comments ("He clearly can inspire and motivate people and energise them, which is a very important part of being president. And he's smart as a whip so there's nothing he can't learn.")

Over the past couple of days, the faint praise has gotten more attention from the press than the more positive comments. YouTube footage of raucous crowd at one of Hillary Clinton's appearances fed the frenzy even more, with some commentators speculating about whether she would withdraw her name from the ballot or not.

Eventually Obama was forced to try to calm the waters, calling Bill Clinton "very gracious" and coming close to accusing interviewer Kate Snow of ginning the whole thing up. Then, in a surprise move late on Thursday, Obama invited Bill Clinton to be a keynote speaker at the convention, scheduled just before the vice presidential nominee's speech. Clinton's acceptance was quick.

It's still too early to see if this move has patched up the bad blood between the two camps. Will the Hillary supporters who pledged to vote Republican out of spite be mollified? Will Bill turn his silver tongue to the service of another? Will this bring more of Jim Webb's Fightin' Appalachians into the voting booth for Obama?

5.00 (funny, funny)

Oh wait that was Larry Craig. John Edwards left his cripple wife for his mistress! Oh wait, that was John McCain. Hmmm...what were we talking about again?

Glad that's over so we can get back to important issues facing us like lip synching Chinese urchins, Britney at the MTV Video Awards, and the gratuitous use of the word "retard" in a Ben Stiller flick.

I'm pretty disappointed the distributor caved on that retard issue. Even a retard can recognize when Hollywood's being lampooned and not them!

I missed what the distributor did to cave on that issue.  I probably won't be seeing the flick at the cineplex; in spite of liking a lot of what Downey has done recently, having Black and Stiller on the marquee is usually enough to steer me away.  I find it a bit over the top that Tim Shriver and the rest of the well-meaning crew of activists is making this film something they're willing to get out and protest.  Let's see a heavily promoted parody of American action flicks with almost no plot aspects to be taken seriously is suddenly taken as a serious attack on mentally challenged people, with their condemnation replete with the use of the "R-word" and the "N-word" to make their point.  Just wondering if we'll be able to get to the point where we can use every letter in the alphabet to describe some sort of offensive word?  What would the "Q-word" or the "Z-word" be?

It's too bad that the primary campaign was so heated that it now seems to be difficult for the Clintons to support their own party's Presidential candidate, but unless they want to actually leave the party (as Joe Lieberman did) they are politically obligated to do so.  However, they can get away with supporting Obama in a low-key manner, and not campaigning with their best effort.  Anyone belonging to a given political party must at least substantially support the policies and the candidates of that party, otherwise, there is no reason to belong to it.

I think that whatever residual ill-feelings are left after the primary campaign, everybody will get over it, sooner or later, and will get on with larger issues.  If Obama is elected President I am sure he will be working closely with Hillary Clinton on the creation of a national health-care system and on many other issues as well.  Their agreements are much more substantial than their disagreements.

As much as I would like to believe that, I have a very strong suspicion that if Obama manages to win the election in spite of the Clinton's "help", Hillary Clinton will be about the last person he will call for advice on any subject.

{Insert amusing quotation here}

 I thought I was done being disappointed by Bill Clinton.

"It was an ancient rule of Hawaiians that no one should hurt another bodily, or through theft of goods or through injury to feelings.These were the only sins."
