Diary

In our time, no foreign army has ever occupied American soil. Until now.

I was on vacation when Russia invaded Georgia. I joked with some people that back in the US folks in the southeast were probably stacking sandbags, buying ammo, and laying in extra food thinking that all those headlines about Russian armored columns heading into Georgia meant WWIII had just kicked off in the Peach State. Of course, I was just joking because I didn't think anybody could be that ignorant. Then I got home and saw this in the news.

As one of the commenters on the Telegraph site said, "It doesn't surprise me."

Having spent a considerable amount of time in south Georgia on work-related travel in the mid 90s, if anything I'm surprised that there hasn't been a lot more of this showing up in the media.

However in the defense of news-challenged rednecks, I'd be willing to bet that the residents of the state of Georgia probably would have given the Russians a bit more trouble than the residents of the Republic of Georgia did.

Isn't that the truth. I'd imagine they'd do a lot better than trying to block tanks with a police barricade.

5.00 (informative)

Sadly, these guys probably are better armed than the RoG military...and I'm sure they'd be glad to fight Putin's troops, just as soon as they verified that he was a member of the Illuminati.

On a related note, does your state have a Guard/militia organization (Not the "National Guard" but one of those Home Guard type of outfits. Ours formed it supposedly during WWI or WWII to cover the domestic missions since the National Guard units were overseas. We even have a naval milita. How quaint. Long paragraph in parenthesis, FTW!!) ? I ask because ours does, and almost anybody can join and get trained, etc. The reason I bring this up is once they did an investigation and found a large segment of the members were actual hardcore survivalist types who signed up for the training and the military like play dates with like minded talk radio listeners.

What I found hilarious about the whole string of newspaper articles was that the survialists needed a government organization to get it together. Every other self respecting extremist group (especially the true american patriots out west) organizes themselves in a private enterprise (invisble hand of the paranoid extremist movement, FTW!). We must have statist paranoid survivalists up here.

I mean, like a guy in tactical cammo army surplus gear with a $3500 automatic weapon needs a state sanctioned unit to learn how to be a survivalist? COME ON!

Bragg, Benning, whatever. There's, what, like 10% of the Army deployed to Iraq at any given time?

But never mind that: did you see the playground on the west side of that pic? What red-blooded American kid wouldn't love that?

The jump towers are a few miles away (and cast a distinctive shadow). Different school.

Believe me, I understand that.

"I say old chap, look what those ignorant colonists are on about now. "

But in this particular case, I would be shocked if there weren't some examples of the stereotype proving to be accurate, hence my original comment.
