McCain Does The Impossible

John McCain thought he had the perfect way to discredit his opponent Barack Hussein Obama. He would making a video equating Obama's "rock star" status to the vapidity that Americans associate with Paris Hilton and Britney Spears. For a day it worked. But in so doing, McCain accomplished what was previously thought impossible: making Paris Hilton politically relevant.

Hilton quickly shot back with a stylishly produced video of her own. In it, she called McCain the world's oldest celebrity. She chided his attack ad style and the entire interaction left Hilton looking as human and approachable as she ever has. McCain's best reply to the political spot from Paris? To allege that "perhaps...[she] has a more substantive energy plan than Barack." As if!

4.00 (interesting)

Looking at it coldly, Hilton helped McCain.  Her video kept McCain's "celebrity" attack in the news for another media cycle.  Her only slams on him were pretty mild--they were based on his age, and that's not exactly something he has been hiding.  Her mere presence (or "political relevance" as thefadd calls it) re-emphasizes McCain's point that Obama's level of discourse has been mighty thin, so thin that a celebutant in a swimsuit can offer a more appealing plan.

American voters (who, after all, elected George W. Bush among other intellectual light-weights) generally seem to have a high tolerance for thin discourse, so I doubt that this particular criticism of Obama will sway voters very much (if anything, accusations of intellectualism would probably do more harm).  In any event, when the debates take place in September, we will get to see just how substantial the level of discourse is going to be.  It's too early to tell, as yet.

Yeah, is Obama an intellectual or a lightweight? McCain should get his story straight ;-)

It is easy to buy small plaster models of what you think life is like.

Au contraire. If that really was Paris Hilton, and she was delivering her own message (i.e. didn't have a staff of writers at collegehumor.com helping her), then I see the message itself as the harshest attack.

The subtext of McCain's message was intended to diminish Obama through his celebrity by tying him to the celebutants (nice term, that). The celebutant chose to counter, not in Obama's defense but her own, by demonstrating that she could achieve some level of relevance and reasoned discourse herself.

Which is why I wondered about ghostwriters, etc.

Apparently the script was written by someone else, but the article I read gushed about how Paris and her teeny little brain managed to, like, memorize it all.

I thought the Hilton clip was a witty riposte, but really, when you're famous for nothing more than being famous (and leaking a home-shot porno tape), you don't  need much of an excuse to present yourself to the public.

It helps being freakishly wealthy (Thanks, Daddy & Mommy) and starring on a crap TV show, The Simple Life with Nicole Richie, something of a train wreck in progress.  It was awful, but hilarious watching to see what Hilton and Richie would fuck-up next.  Not exactly people I'd want to use in a political ad.  I never saw the ad, but I'm betting some adman got fired for that one.

there's only one way to find out...

Apparently, Hilton isn't "freakishly wealthy," she has quite a bit of money by the standards of Common People, but not so much that she could keep up the life style she is accustomed to.  So she had to turn her celebrity into a paying gig, and she's done quite well at that.

Ghostwriter, confirmed:

"Adam thought it would be really funny to get Paris to respond to the John McCain ad that featured her," Funny or Die content director Amy Rhodes told The Associated Press on Wednesday. "Adam contacted Paris directly, and she agreed to do it. He wrote the sketch. And she really, really loved it."
