Hello! Why Is This So Fucking Hard to Understand?

How many fucking times do people have to be told, "Don't feed the bears."?

There was a bizarre bear attack at my favourite fishing camp recently.  Fortunately, the victim survived.  Unfortunately, it was the culmination of a stupid fucking practice by the folks that run the camp - namely, dumping fish offal a mere 80 yards away across the small tributary of the Gordon River where the camp has its docks.

The two different news stories linked here have really basic mistakes in them.  The first says the victim was fishing, (he wasn't - he was tied up at the dock) and that the bear climbed from the river into the boat (wrong - the bear climbed onto the float first.)  The second calls the piece of water the bear swam across the "Jordan" river, which is in fact about 50 kilometres from where this happened.  But what really fucking smokes my salmon is that not a single media piece mentioned that bears have been a problem in this particular camp for the past three years.  Ever since the moronic decision to dump fish guts less than 100 yards from camp was made.

DON'T FUCKING FEED THE BEARS!

That is all.

Newspaper reports are usually at least that bad.  It gives you a new perspective on the news to know the truth about a story, doesn't it?

This is really unusual for a black bear, believe it or not, even if they lose a bit of fear by being around people occasionally.  He would have mostly been drawn in close by the fish on the boats, but it's still really unusual to attack someone unless they're going after some food or scent they're carrying, and even then they're rarely that persistent.

Here's your explanation.  A bear that's thin in September is very hungry and isn't going to live through the winter anyhow, and old male bears are braver.  Normally a black bear would have to be really starving to stick around after getting hit like that.

Oftentimes a bear is really set on something, pain just makes it mad.

One time there was this guy who was driving a compact car around the east side of Flathead Lake in Montana, and he hit an old male grizzly bear.  Well, he stopped to calm down, and the bear came back and pounded the hell out of the car.  He managed to start up and limp off again.  My aunt was working at the auto dealership where he brought the car to get it repaired.  She said the door looked like someone had been pounding it with a sledge hammer, the front wheels had bad toe-in, and that there was blood and fur under the wheel wells.  There were later reports of a grizzly with an injured shoulder wandering around near Flathead Lake.

Don't count on scaring a grizzly.

The poor guy was from India and had no idea that there were even bears in the US.  He called up his rental car company in Boston and explained what happened, but for some reason they didn't buy the "a bear beat the hell out of the car," story, and made him drive the thing back to Boston without getting it fully repaired.

Thanks for the link.  I'm fully aware how bad news reporting can be...I used to work in the industry.

While that particular bear was in a bad way, I still believe he, and other problem bears in the area wouldn't be a concern at all if the camp properly disposed of fish guts.  Bears were seldom seen around camp until the marina began getting lazy and not bothering to have someone do a 45 minute round trip every couple of days to dump the offal well out in the large bay that is Port Renfrew.  Instead, they began towing the floating bin all of a hundred yards across the Gordon tributary and dumped it there.  I guess they thought having to kill a couple of bears every year (two were shot last year after being a persistent nuisance in camp) is a small price to pay for being able to see black bears every day.

Don't get me wrong.  I love the place, and the two guys that run it, Bud and Rex, are both great guys.  But the decision to feed the fucking bears so near camp is moronic.  Here's hoping this incident has made them see the folly of their ways.

I heard that walking up to a bear chanting "I love you" is perfectly safe.
