Coming out of the closet is no longer cool.

It is easy to buy small plaster models of what you think life is like.

what does an entertainer sell?

Ok so I'm hoping that enough TnT people know me well enough to recognize that I really don't care about people's sexual orientation -- in a similar vein, I really don't care about the lives of celebrities.  The internet being what it is however, stories about people's sexual orientation as well as proclivities do make it across my news radar.

Which brings me to Harold and Kumar goes to White Castle. One key aspect of the movie is that it features the actor who played Doogie Howser (Neil Patrick Harris) aka NPH in the film as 'himself'. In it, NPH is portrayed as a hetero-sex addicted, drug using generally crazy guy.

This 'role' was somewhat reprised/repackaged in the comedy series "How I met your mother" where NPH plays a very similar character.

Then one day it crossed my radar that NPH had come out as gay. Unexpectedly that news did affect how I saw both the movie and the show. Where the character was a mindless sex-focused alpha-male, I now saw the same exact film as some sort of subtle satire on hyper hetero males i.e. secretly they are gay. It kind of took away (a little) from the humor to be honest.

The point is that an entertainer sells more than his/her performance, an entertain also sells an image. Can anyone of us really watch the Naked Gun movies and not think "oh there goes OJ, the murderer who got away with it". When the persons image interferes with the performance (Fran Drescher in This is Spinal Tap), or interrupts the suspension of disbelief associated with the performance, audiences are a bit cheated.

So Aiken announces he is gay. Welp I don't care ---was never a fan. But if Richard Dawkins ever came out as a closet catholic, or Obama announces he is indeed secretly muslim -- well I'd have to reexamine my perspective on how I saw them. Its not that I hate catholics or muslims, but the image presented affects the actions just as much as the actions affect the image.

Memory is a strange bell, jubilee and knell.

Well, you've nailed exactly why they stay in the closet, especially the "teen heart throb" and Tom Cruise types. But that always made me wonder why they didn't just say they were bi...I'm sure that will happen at some point.

It kind of took away (a little) from the humor to be honest.

Really? There was never any question to me from the first time I saw the Harold & Kumar series that he was gay and that fact totally added to the humor and the make believe for me.

I guess I really am not 'hip' to the proclivities of celebrities. Perhaps the fact that NPH was gay was 'known' to people when they watched the movie initially, but it certainly wasn't known to me.

Note: I'm not saying that the movie magically transformed into being unfunny, but that it took on undertones of satire that I had previously not attributed to it. To remove the gay issue from the discussion -- I think I enjoyed the latest Batman film a little bit more 'knowing' that Heath Ledger was dead and this was his final performance. These external factors do affect (at least for me) how I perceive the actual product - and its not as if I hate dead people (or gay people).

You know...in that picture, he kind of looks like Sarah Palin with short hair.

It's the end of the world as we know it, and I feel fine

I couldnt place who the hell he looked like but you're totally right. Maybe he's her child from one of those "other" relationships.

I'm confused. I thought he was already out of the closet.

He was only in the closet to that small group of people whose gaydar is entirely non-functional - which was apparently the entire "Claynation".

Yes, and that's the best part of this story.  The Claymates are having their minds blown.  From the second link:

"please tell me I'm not the only one who is shocked beyond belief! I feel numb I'm so upset. This can't be real!! How can you guys say this won't change anything? This changes EVERYTHING. I don't even know what to think right now."

"How could I not see this.... Everyone I know would laugh at me and wonder how I could possibly think he's straight. So I come here where everyone seemed to think the same as I did. Boy was I wrong. I'm surprised at the number of fans that suspected this all along. I'm talking lots .... however this is after the fact and it doesn't help now. ...5 years is a long time believing in something that wasn't true. It's not that easy to just "get over it". "

"It's not about him being Gay, it's about being deceived for 5 years and going to bat for him by explaining to people that have read the rumors and wanted to know if it were true and as a Clay fan, I put myself out their and convinced them that the rumors were false and now my word means nothing to those people for I have now done what Clay has done to his fans . . . I HAVE ALSO DECEIVED THEM and I didn't even know it at the time. "

I actually do feel kind of bad for people who say they were duped.  Of course, if you continued to be duped after the news broke in 2006, it's really your fault.

In order to be duped ...

... you have to want to be duped.  I can recall my grandmother, who used to live with us, whose favorite performer was Liberace.  Now, there was just no amount of convincing my grandmother that Liberace was gay (not that there was anything wrong with it).  Because she thought homosexuality was morally wrong, she couldn't say she loved to hear his playing if she accepted that he was gay.  According to her, he was just artistic and sensitive and she loved the way he cared about his mother.  But, don't you dare imply that Liberace was gay.

Illegitimi non carborundum.
