Mass injuries and multiple causalities were reported at a Connecticut power plant Saturday morning after a large explosion left a large plume of black smoke hanging over the affected area. The explosion damaged buildings off site of the plant and was felt at least 15 miles away. Plant managers were unsure how many people were dead, but confirmed police reports that it was a "mass casualty" incident. The facility is a gas fired power plant that was recently undergoing construction.

Details are still hazy, but reports indicate at least 50 workers were inside the building at the time. Two casualties have been confirmed, search and rescue is ongoing.

While five deaths is not in any way a minor incident, I think someone at CNN got WAY ahead of this story in the early reporting.

Your authority is not recognized here in Fort Kickass...

There are, on average, 16 work safety related deaths each day in the US. This incident was no doubt louder than most.

And deadlier, since most work safety deaths are single death, no additional injury situations.  Here at least 5 are dead, and 12 severely injured, and likely more as they dig out the explosion.  It also blew out windows, and shook towns miles away.

But the likely newsworthy part is going to be the strengthening of the paranoia and the NIMBY action against power generation.  After Three Mile Island you couldn't get a neighborhood to accept nuclear power plants.

Right, most work safety deaths are onesies or twosies.  But here we're talking about an explosion at a natural gas facility.  Think a major refinery fire and I think you'll find the body count goes up quite a bit.  Possibly the only thing that reduced the number of dead was the fact that the facility was still under construction therefore a full production crew wasn't on the site.
