Another Moderate Republican Loses His Primary

After 35 years of Senate service, Richard Lugar (R-IN), whose reputation for foreign policy expertise and bipartisanship has long been well-respected, got cashiered by Indiana Republicans, who chose Indiana State Treasurer Richard Mourdock to run for U.S. Senate as their candidate instead of Lugar.

Another Tea Party victory? If so, it gives Democrats better chances in Indiana than they had before. For now, Republicans like their chances of winning control of America's Senate in November, but pushing aside old-timers like Lugar makes that final victory less likely.

But watch out, he could still get elected Governor in Indiana someday, and he could still get asked to be Obama's Secretary of Defence (if Obama wins another term).

Lugar was defeated by 20 points, a landslide in today's climate. So much for all those articles about how the Tea party was finished.

5.00 (interesting)

This is by far their biggest scalp. All of their other victories except for the defeat of  Representative Schmidt of Ohio had occurred in contests for open seats or at party conventions.  To destroy  a sitting Repoublican Senator in a primary is a big deal.  I'm not sure which was more surprising the defeat of Lugar or the humiliation of organized labor in the Wisconsin primary.
