To me the criticism of why a libertarian would take public money is a facile non-starter. They aren't anarchists.

Remember when Johnson was running for Republicans' nomination and polls showed that if Trump ran on some third party ticket he would get 19% against Obama and Romney and that if Johnson ran on some third party ticket he would get 14% against Obama and Romney? I didn't believe it then (although I really wanted to), but if that poll reflected anything maybe it was that Americans might be ready for some serious change.
I hope Johnson shows up in national debates. I hope he gets taken seriously. I wouldn't bet on it though, mostly because America's powers-that-be would be happier if they didn't have to respond to Libertarian criticisms of society. Tired of over-intrusive airport security, pointless pot laws, or pyrrhic victories in Whatchamastan? Trotting out derision also seems preferable to reasoned argumentation in dealing with people who think such thoughts.
