Ouya!

A $99 android based game console has raised over $3 million on kickstarter in 2 days.  That sound you heard was traditional venture capitalists everywhere pooping their pants.

Obviously, the team behind this had substantial initial funding and sponsorship to get their prototype up and running and the kickstarter event is as much marketing stunt as fundraising, but it certainly does demonstrate that the crowd-sourced funding model can be successful and that startups may be able to avoid having to take massive bank loans or give up substantial equity to fund themselves.

I read your writeup and the first two paragraphs of the linked page. I have no idea what you are selling or why I or anyone else should care.

Fail.

At least it's something different than LED lights or knockoff NFL jerseys.

I got more styles than prison got bricks- ain't that some shit?

Only $700 for an extra controller and your gamertag etched on the console!  You can't afford not to invest!

Hackers welcome.

Have at it: It's easy to root (and rooting won't void your warranty). Everything opens with standard screws.

Shitty mobile games on a TV?  Built around the free-to-play model just like all your favorite F2P Korean MMOs?  Not only guaranteed but encouraged pirac-y plus it runs on Android?  Yep, all those "AAA game developers" will be lining up at the door for this one- look out Activision!

I'm not going to invest $2,000 for the free T shirt or whatever, but I'll probably buy one for $99 as soon as it's been modded to use an Xbox controller just for the emulators.

I mean I really don't play games that much anymore, but shitty mobile games? The games I've seen for phones are pretty intense nowadays, I mean certainly something to give console games a run for their money.

Plus we're talking about games that are like $5-$10-$20 vs console games are $50-$60.

5.00 (working)

Those games exist because there's a small (but nevertheless very active on the internet) market segment who play them at work.

Trust me, nobody's sitting at home playing Angry Birds while their copy of Skyrim/Madden/CoD collects dust.

I didn't mean kiddy games like Angry Birds, which are created more to kill time and provide quick entertainment when you're waiting around. I meant games like Amazing Spiderman or Need for Speed or Shadowgun.

These games are pretty robust, they are very close to console games. It makes sense because the processors and GPUs in the phones are just as good as laptops.

I think you are somewhat missing the point here - think Braid & Super Meat Boy, not Assassin's Creed or CoD.

Braid & Super Meat Boy

Yeah, I know what Kotaku says; but don't confuse "indie" games with "AAA" games.

I love kickstarter. It's a concept that liberals and libertarians can embrace.

That is pretty cool.

I'm a little unsure how anyone can really be anti-kickstarter, but apparently those people exist (hi Goro!)

The first time I heard of Kickstarter was when the small, square iPod Nano came out and someone decided to make a wristband for it and put it on Kickstarter.
