NFL OUT OF CONTROL!

Forget the players beating the shit out of each other with lead pipes and sacks full of doorknobs in front of refs that can't even control the game! Basically, the Green Bay Packers got screwed on a blown call at the last play of the game in front of millions of Americans on Monday Night Football. Fans immediately got pissed. The players took to the internets with tweet heat. Bill Clinton even got involved! The NFL released a final statement saying that the result of the game is final. At this point the league (a multibillion dollar business) is about $3 million apart from the referees it locked out.

You may find this article interesting.

What I find more interesting is the relationship between organized gambling and "legitimate" sports.   If you were in control of the mafia, would you support your referee union brothers, or would you cut a deal with the billionaires to keep the farce going?

Any mafioso who thinks of union workers as "brothers" is destined for an early retirement. The reason for organized crime to support a union is two-fold: extract money directly, and place personnel who will (ideally, not obviously) call matches so that the gambling odds favor the house. If a failure of #2 presents an external opportunity to increase #1, so be it.

The reason for organized crime to support a union is two-fold:

Sigh.  You identify as a conservative Democrat, so let me remind you:  The reason for organized crime to support a union is to get "competent yet loyal" people hired, so the job gets done, and with a tidy profit!  Any non-blind football fan can attest the "job" is not getting "done".

extract money directly, and place personnel who will (ideally, not obviously) call matches so that the gambling odds favor the house

Union dues extract money directly.  Any good mafia who used peons for their labour jobs in the context of the NFL, would insert the best.goddamn.truck drivers available.   Trust my anecdote, gerry:  i work with teamsters on a daily basis--I've nearly been run over by several of them. If I were the mafia boss and "hiring" NFL employees,  I would demand quality and discretion.

and place personnel who will (ideally, not obviously) call matches so that the gambling odds favor the house.  Yeah, me too.  Here's a thing! This book.  Did you read it?  If not,  read some reviews and get back to me about how organized gangster-style capitalism contrasts with your apple-pie-with-milk political ideal.

If a failure of #2 presents an external opportunity to increase #1, so be it.

Apparently The Mafia and Roger "I'm wearing my daddy's coat to church and its 3 sizes to big" Goodell backed down from your conclusion.  OR DID HE?

The problem with the replacement refs has been that they've been unpredictable. Vegas is a sucker for predictability so I'm betting they back their unions bros over the scab hos.

The replacement refs were a disaster, but given the closeness of it the call itself wasn't that bad.

At game speed and in the context of the rules it's a really close call. The referees erred, but not grossly - compare it to this "touchdown" by Vinny Testaverde  in 1999, which lead to instant replay (coincidentally the replay official of Monday's game was one of the referees of that Jets-Seahawks game).

As for complaining about Super Bowl XL, I think a good time to stop would be a few days after Raiders fans stop complaining about the Immaculate Reception.

At game speed and in the context of the rules, offensive pass interference should have been called before that ball came down, as NFL officials later admitted (you just can't review calls, or rather non-calls, like that).

I figured officials were trying to make up for calling pass interference against Seattle during Green Bay's only touchdown drive, which call also sucked horribly and which enabled Green Bay to continue its drive which should have ended right then and there.

I've never seen pass interference called on a hail Mary when a group is going for the ball.

Hey, what do I know? Commentators who said things like "Seattle receiver Golden Tate literally shoved down a Green Bay defensive back in one of the most blatant offensive pass interference penalties the world has ever seen" must not understand things as you do. NFL officials, who said in their ruling upholding Seattle's win,

"While the ball is in the air, Tate can be seen shoving Green Bay cornerback Sam Shields to the ground. This should have been a penalty for offensive pass interference, which would have ended the game. It was not called and is not reviewable in instant replay."
plainly don't get it either. Maybe you should consider changing your career, unless you currently make more than $150,000/year for part-time work.

Talk doesn't change the fact they rarely call pass interference on hail Mary's when everyone is jumping up in a bunch like that. Maybe you should consider calming down a bit.

It's ironic to me that this is the call that gets it done. You simply don't call offensive pass interference on a final play 50 yard hail mary. No one does that. Other than that it was a close call. The issue was the same issue they had along -- it took them 15 minutes. But it happened on the final (and deciding) play of the last (and nationally televised) game of the week. So this is the mistake that finally gets it done. No wonder they were fired by the lingerie football league...

Were the refs really that bad, that the outrage makes sense from a "straw that broke the camel's back" type of perspective?  I haven't been watching the NFL yet this year.

At some point, you do have to call pass interference on a final 50 yard hail mary or it just becomes open season to start decking people.  This strikes me as blatant enough that it probably should have been called just to clean up the hail mary plays a bit, but as you say, it's a call they practically never make, so I can't really understand the outrage about not making it.  You might as well be outraged about the NBA not calling traveling on the deciding play.

The call itself was actually pretty close.  Yeah, it ought to have been an interception under NFL rules (which are the better set), but I'm pretty sure that's a touchdown under college rules.  If you run games with all officials being wannae college refs, it's hardly a surprising call to see them make.  If the outrage was just about that call, it doesn't make a lot of sense to me.

What's different about college rules that would have made that more decidedly a touchdown?

I don't think they address the issue of losing one hand specifically.  They both caught it simultaneously with both hands.  The receiver maintained one hand on the ball the entire time, which should be good enough for possession in college.  The defender had two hands on it the entire time, which is specifically addressed in NFL rules as taking possession if the receiver doesn't have both hands on the ball.

The white hat never came down to sort things out and try to get the call right, he went straight to the replay viewer.

In all likelihood, regular refs will be officiating at games next weekend.  Thank God, because I'm really getting tired over all the outrage over the replacements' shitty calls.  I'm looking forward to being outraged over the regular refs' shitty calls.

Regular refs will be back for Thursday Night football on 27 September. What else could have happened after Monday's debacle?

It only took two days for NFL owners to settle after what happened Monday night. Now if only they had done that to begin with.
