In retrospect, it must have seemed quite simple and brilliant to the political geniuses in the White House. You have an incumbent you want to protect from a primary challenge by a determined adversary. Both opponents belong to the Democratic Party, so you don't want to openly oppose either. Why not play politics the old school Chicago way? You know, buy off the one you don't want to win. What could go wrong?

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid is experiencing an unlikely political crisis - attacks on him by the Republican party for making racist remarks. During the 2008 presidential campaign, Reid apparently called Obama "light skinned" and stated that he talked "with no Negro dialect, unless he wanted to have one.'' Obama has already issued a statement saying that he discussed the matter with Reid and that he considers the issue closed.

It's getting to be that time of year again. Within the next few weeks a magazine will hit the newsstands and the "person or persons who most affected the news and our lives, for good or ill, and embodied what was important" about 2009 will be revealed to us. Yes, it's time to ponder who will be on the cover of Time's "Person of the Year" issue.

This couldn't have happened just a year ago. A bill making it a federal crime to attack someone because of their sexual orientation has been passed by the US Senate and sent to the White House with the certainty it will be signed into law. The bill, which was included in this year's defense spending bill, survived two attempts to filibuster and was passed by vote of 68-29.

Much of the attention at President Obama's speech to a joint session of Congress centered around his ideas for reforming health care. As fate would have it, two words uttered during the speech are getting much more press than the rest of it.

Lost among the gushers of cash being loosed on the economy through bank bailouts, loans to automakers and stimulus shenanigans is the garden variety boodle that continues to be tossed at problems and pet political projects. Such is a federal program which is due for a hefty increase in funds this year. True, it's small potatoes in comparison to all the special money we've been printing recently, but it's a classic example of political pork nonetheless.

Mystified by those universal default interest rate bumps? Upset over the way the bank applies payments on the cards you hold with them? Outraged over your cancelled line of credit at the bank? You remember the hubbub that arose when certain members of the Roman Catholic Church denounced the selection of President Barack Obama as commencement speaker at the University of Notre Dame. Well, get ready for another dose of religious wackiness as yet another college is being lambasted by a senior Catholic prelate for having the audacity to have another "unclean" commencement speaker. The anti-Obama anger is explicable due to some of Obama's very public views on a woman's right to choose not to mention changes to policy on stem cell research. This latest one ought to have you scratching your head whilst saying "WTF."

The credit card industry doesn't get a whole lot of love. Difficult as it might be to imagine, people have been reacting with shock and horror at some of the things the credit card banks have wrought. Cancelled cards, frozen credit limits, outrageous fees, inexplicable rate hikes - these are just a few of the things which have caught eye of the public. Thus, the public's protectors, also known as the federal government, have been stepping in to provide relief. Only, to hear the credit card banks tell the story, what the federal government is doing is stepping on its ability to earn a profit.
