Although the US and China are major trading partners, there is one sort of commerce officially forbidden. Anything appearing on the State Department's US Munitions List is considered a no-no, and has been ever since the events in Tiananmen Square in 1989. But, virtually anything else made in this country can be exported to China. But, what happens when something not technically considered a weapon which is okayed for sale to China might be put to questionable uses? Does the US government say, "nope it's still not a weapon, so go ahead and sell more of them." Or does the US reclassify the item and shut off a potentially lucrative market for American companies? Such is the case of the case of the Sonic Blaster.

Last Friday riots shook the Tibetan capital of Lhasa. China's official Xinhua news agency reports 10 dead in the protests, but Tibet's government-in-exile (in India) suggests that as many as ten times that amount were killed by Chinese security forces in the process of quelling the uprising.

Think the trade deficit with China is bad? You are correct. Think the freighters and tramp steamers head back to the Orient empty after disgorging their plastic trinkets onto American shores? You are wrong.

Some lessons can be drawn from this latest story. It could be that it's a slender thread separating good from disaster. Or, it could be that no matter what you do, if you leave Murphy in charge, bad things are bound to happen. Or, it could be a bit premature to use "Chinese" and "quality" in the same sentence. Whatever, Mattel is recalling close to a million toys. These are just the latest products delivered to American consumers by the Chinese poison train.
