Two states have held a monopoly on being the first to begin the Presidential Primary contest every four years: New Hampshire and Iowa. The 2008 election may shake things up with various states trying to move their primaries to earlier days, and candidates ignoring New Hampshire or Iowa to go after delegate rich populous states scheduled for later in the primary season.

So apparently these guys known as The Democrats held their first little debate thingy this past week. It was so well publicised that I personally didn't hear about it until the next day on NPR. The major candidates--Obama, Hillary, John Edwards and Bill Richardson competed--as well as a few minor ones.

Note to politicians: Do not use the word "you" as an indefinite referrent. John Kerry, speaking at a campaign rally at Pasadena City College, said "You know, education, if you make the most of it, you study hard, you do your homework, you make an effort to be smart, you can do well. If you don't, you get stuck in Iraq."

After the stunning success of its Contract with America platform in the 1994 midterm elections, for the last 12 years the Republican Party has dominated the US House of Representatives and for most of that period has held a majority in the Senate as well. With the 2006 mid-term elections a little less than two weeks away, it appears that the Democrats may be able to take advantage of the traditional midterm letdown for the President's party and retake the House (and possibly the Senate).

It's only 25 months until the 2008 presidential election, and we may have our slate already. Former Virginia Governor Mark Warner removed himself from consideration for the Democratic nomination for President. Warner's withdrawal leaves a small field of possible Democratic contenders for 2008: Hillary Clinton, John Edwards, possibly Barack Obama, and, well, maybe John Kerry again.

As we approach the 2006 US Elections the focus so far has been all about on the Republican majority in both houses. The war in Iraq, the economy, Katrina, and most recently the Mark Foley scandal have made the election a referendum on the GOP in general.
