In a food stamp stampede that some officials say demonstrates how bad the food crisis is for some, dozens of people were trampled outside Milwaukee's main welfare office Monday when the doors opened. Many of the estimated 3,000 people waiting on line were there to claim benefits to get replacement food after sustaining damages in the recent storms.

President Bush and California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger have declared a large region of Southern California a disaster area in response to massive fires sweeping through the area.
