Usually a candidate garnering support from another party or enemy party operatives would be A Bad Thing, at the very least a head scratcher. Then why is an opposing political party boosting a Republican candidate in the race for the New Hampshire primary?

As the 2008 elections approach, the GOP has shed 3 prominent members from its legislative ranks. Senator Trent Lott (R-MI) announced resignation makes him the 3rd prominent GOP member to resign in the past year and the 6th member of the Senate to announce he will not be returning for another term. He joins 'The Hammer' (R-TX) and former Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert as private citizens. Smarting from horrendous losses in the '06 midyear elections, could it be possible the GOP is trying to reinvent itself by divesting excess baggage? Or is the Party of Lincoln swerving further off course?

Amongst the almost homogeneous field of 2008 Republican presidential candidates, Ron Paul has consistently stood out by promoting the Libertarian ideals of personal privacy, small government, and withdrawal from the international community. Former New York City mayor Rudolph Giuliani's campaign received a serious boost this week with national coverage of polls that suggest he has a huge lead over rivals in a head to head competition, even among the Republican party's traditionally-more-conservative group of likely primary voters.

After the stunning success of its Contract with America platform in the 1994 midterm elections, for the last 12 years the Republican Party has dominated the US House of Representatives and for most of that period has held a majority in the Senate as well. With the 2006 mid-term elections a little less than two weeks away, it appears that the Democrats may be able to take advantage of the traditional midterm letdown for the President's party and retake the House (and possibly the Senate).
