Whether you consider it a recession or a "rough patch" (President Bush's favored description from earlier this year), we live in troubling times. If you're a major public research company, you ask the public if they think the country is going in the right or the wrong direction.

WSGWBD? What Should George W Bush Do?

That would be what should George Bush do once he's a former president? This will come in a little over three months. At that point, he could possibly rank as the worst president in US history (at least that's the the consensus of historians). But, he'll be a fairly healthy 61-year-old with tons of executive experience. If he's inherited his daddy's genes, he's probably got a couple more decades ahead of him and it's only fair to ask, what should he do with his time?

The reason this story is being filed in my diary is that I will not practice a scintilla of objectivity with this one. As is often the case whenever the Disabled American Veterans (DAV) hold their convention, they invite a high ranking member of the executive branch of the government to deliver a few words. So it was to be this year as they invited Vice President Dick Cheney to be the guest speaker at the convention set to take place in Las Vegas from 9 to 12 August. They'll just have to soldier alone without hearing the words of inspiration one of this nation's biggest chicken hawks has to offer them as the DAV has yanked their invite to Cheney.

President George W. Bush is only delivering two university commencement addresses this year. One will be at the US Air Force Academy and the other is at Furman University in Columbia, South Carolina. Considering that Bush is Commander in Chief for everyone graduating at the Air Force Academy, you may expect that speech to pass without incident. Considering that Furman is located in the heart of the reddest of red areas in the country and the school has some old school Baptist ties, you might expect his May 31st speech will likewise pass without incident. But, this is a president with approval ratings hovering around 30 percent, thus you would be wrong.

Congress is in the process of considering the most massive expansion to the GI Bill since World War II. Democratic leaders in both houses are solidly behind the measure with Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D - CA) calling it a "thank you" to the men and women who have put their lives on the line for the nation. President George Bush, obviously thinking the men and women in uniform have been thanked enough, will veto it if it passes. He essentially says it's too much of a "thank you" to his liking.

I spent a good portion of my Friday evening at a fund raiser at some banquet hall. You know, the ones everybody gets guilted into going to, or possibly for the open bar serving only wine in a plastic cup or Canadian beer by the pitcher. The good thing is the evening allowed for lengthy introspection after which I realized a 3rd party candidate has little to no shot in this country for the foreseeable future.

The soap opera that was the final days of Paul Wolfowitz's term as president of the World Bank reached a climax with the word of his resignation from his job, effective June 30th. The steps leading up to this moment having already been discussed here at TnT, the only thing left is to fill in some of the blanks from then to now.
