At (US)$125 million, it may be the biggest book deal ever.  Google blinked and settled two lawsuits which had represented the main road bumps in the path of its project to digitize just about every book ever printed.  The settlement sets up the mechanism to ensure copyright holders get paid and allows Google's project to proceed.  It's being hailed as "historic" by Google.  At the same time, it leaves unanswered the question of whether the search giant had violated any the law in the first place.

Meeting a need that no one realized they had, Google has unleashed a new web browser upon the world: Chrome.  It offers a clean interface, really fast performance, crash protection, fast performance, an Opera-like "speed dial," and also, did I mention, fast performance.

Shakespear Feyissa is learning a few lessons. Lesson one is that your actions can have unintended consequences. Lesson two, once something gets reported on the internet, it's awfully tough to expunge. Feyissa, a practicing Seattle lawyer, says something that happened over ten years ago is causing him pain and anguish because it can easily be googled. He says the original controversy blew over, so how about deleting that report? Problem being that the report in question is in a school newspaper archive. And the student journalists say once reported, forever archived

It's a misconception that Google ever said "Do No Evil." What the search giant, so ubiquitous it has become a verb describing its primary service, does say is "it is possible to make money without doing evil (scroll down to #6)." But there's a couple in Pittsburgh who don't agree with that. Aaron and Christine Boring believe that one Google feature has a less than noble effect - it has taken away their privacy. Google responds, "privacy doesn't exist." In the Borings' opinion, that is pretty evil.

It all started with a minor blow up between a trade group and the internet search giant over publicizing Google's privacy policy. In the course of a week, it has gone from that minor blow up to an active assault on Google over its lack of complying with industry standards on publishing their privacy policies. Further, their failure isn't simply a case of not keeping up with industry standards, they're also breaking the law.

It's rare that a Science Fiction short story is actually scary, but Cory Doctorow's Scroogled is truly frightening. The premise is simple: what if Google were evil?

Three of the most used web services are being torn apart by the legal ramifications of copyright. YouTube (owned by Google), GoogleNews, and MySpace have all seen the writing on the wall (or been handed a judgment) regarding the unauthorized usage of copyrighted materials by their sites. YouTube and MySpace have the same problem, their users are posting copyrighted videos and both have started to act on it. GoogleNews has dug its own grave after losing a recent court case in Belgium.

For most of us, the words "YouTube" and "$1.65 billion" do not go naturally into the same sentence.  The phrases "pet videos," "small-time copyright infringement," and "low-grade amateur porn" seem to fit better.  But now the Valley is swinging like it's 1999 again: Google bought YouTube for $1.65 billion in stock.
