Are You Ready For Some Afghan Fighting?

Everyone seems to agree that the war on terrorism should be focused on Afghanistan.  It's likely just a question of time before American presence in Iraq dials back and that time varies dependent upon whom you listen to -- sooner if you believe Barack Obama, longer if you agree with John McCain.  Then, it would be onto what's left of al-Qaeda and a reinvigorated Taliban, both in Afghanistan and the neighboring provinces in Pakistan.  Sounds like a plan and one the Commander in Chief, whomever he might be, will look to the warriors to accomplish.  But, one of the warriors who will be charged with executing the next phase in the War on Terrorism isn't feeling all that rosy about the prospects of winning that war.

Teaming up with Iran to defeat Iran

As we speak Iraqis are waging a tough battle against militia fighters and criminals in Basra, many of whom have received arms and training and funding from Iran.

The President is trying to sell the attack on the Mahdi Army in Basra as a good guys vs. bad guys  attempt to chase Iranian influence from Iraq.  The problem is that the Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki's Dawa party has far deeper and stronger ties to Iran than does al-Sadr's Mahdi army, and recently Maliki has become  very strongly allied with the SIIC, which has the strongest ties to Iran of any major group in Iraq.

Is it too late for one more war?

The head of CENTCOM, Admiral William Fallon has resigned under pressure from the more hawkish members of the Bush administration.

Admiral Fallon once said that an attack on Iran "would not happen on my watch". Well, it's no longer his watch...and it looks like Iranian conservatives will maintain their grip on the Iranian parliament for the next few years.

US military officials say five Iranian ships threatened and harassed US ships patrolling near Strait of Hormuz in Persian Gulf over weekend of 5-6 January and that US ships almost fired on one Iranian vessel that came within 200 yards after it sent radioed message, ""I am coming at you. You will explode in a couple minutes."

The New American Century - Over In Seven Years?

MayorBob.

Whatever happened to the American Century?  The 20th century was arguably it as the US emerged as one of two superpowers possessing the ability to end life on this planet with a press of the nuclear button.  The collapse of the Soviet Union and the end of the Cold War was thought by some to mean the 21st century would become a New American Century.  After all, the New World Order meant one economic and military superpower in the world that most of our global neighbors looked to for leadership.  But, some things happened along the way during the first decade of the New American Century - the rise of terrorism; warfare eroding our national treasury; an economy that burps and hiccups along; threats, both real and perceived, from illegal immigration, and so on - which have led to a place where it seems the rest of the world really doesn't approve of US leadership.

Will Playing The Iranian Card Work?

British Prime Minister Tony Blair was the first to think the heretofore unthinkable - involve Iran as part of the solution to Iraq, rather than a part of the problem of the region.  Was Blair trying a Nobel Prize move or just an attempt to make it easier for his successor to operate on the world stage?  Who knows, but when one of the most solid of George Bush's partners in Iraq shows a little bit of independence from the official line of "we'll leave when the job is done" it's got to raise some eyebrows.

Iran Won't Play Nice And What Will The World Do About It?

MayorBob.

Posted to Politics on Fri Aug 25, 2006 at 09:19:50 AM EST. RSS.

Is Iran building a nuclear weapons program?  That's a question the rest of the world has for Teheran.  The rest of the world wouldn't mind Iran having a nuclear program, they just aren't too keen on it producing nuclear weapons.  This is especially the case since one of Iran's proxies has been duking it out with one of the US's proxies in Lebanon.  Israel does have a nuclear capability and there are concerns that any renewed Hezbollah-Israeli conflict might turn into a regional one.  Thus the rest of the world offered Iran a proposal which would insure it had access to nuclear fuel, but fuel which couldn't easily be turned into weapons.  Iran just got back to the world and said, "thanks, but we have our own ideas on how the material should be handled."  This was not answer the rest of the world necessarily wanted to hear.
