A military press release announced that the US Army intends to execute Pvt. Ronald A. Gray, a quadruple killer and serial rapist, on December 10th. Pvt. Gray would be the first soldier executed by the military since 1961.

The last thing an outfit like Blackwater would want is to see any of its employees fall under Shari'a law. It's a good thing Paul Bremer established "hands off" as the appropriate way to deal with Blackwater back when he was big cheese in Iraq.

Only 70.7% of the incoming Army recruits held a regular high school diploma in 2007, down 20 points from the 90% benchmark. The lack of qualified recruits is causing some to call for a return to a general draft system.

Under Defense Secretary Bob Gates, the military has moved to stanch the flow of government trained troops into the private sector. The Pentagon has offered a bonus program to its most highly trained field personnel like Green Berets and Navy SEALs. The bonuses range from $8k for a promise to stay on for one year up to $150,000 for a promise to stay enlisted for an additional six years. If taken during an active tour, the payment is tax free.
