Labor contract discussions are the stuff upon which sound snoozes can be built. But one labor agreement recently struck between a major food processing plant and the union representing workers has raised much interest. It seems that, for the next five years, the workers at Tyson Foods in Shelbyville, Tennessee will be swapping paid holidays. Labor Day becomes just another workday and, in its place, the plant workers will be celebrating a paid day off at the end of the Muslim holiday of Ramadan.

Sorry, My Moral Code Will Not Allow Me To Do My Job.

We've had this discussion before.  There were the pharmacists who refused to fill prescriptions for birth control .  There were the Muslim cab drivers at the Minneapolis airport who refused to transport anyone carrying alcohol.  In both instances, the general opinion has been, if moral codes or religious beliefs make it impossible for them to do their jobs, perhaps they ought to think about a career change.  The latest instance of personal beliefs getting in the way of doing a job - Muslim cash register operators refusing to handle pork products -- has a number of people, mostly employers, saying that it's okay.  On the other hand, it's a case which has a lot of people saying, if they can't do their jobs, they shouldn't have those jobs.

The simple facts are these: a young Canadian Muslim girl, playing in a soccer tournament in Quebec, was not permitted to enter the field as she was wearing a hijab and, when requested by the referee, refused to remove it. As a result, her teammates, along with four other teams of eleven-year-olds, took their ball and went home.

No Burqas in the Netherlands

Following up on the gay kiss and topless girls video the Netherlands government is now trying to ban burqas in public places.  The right-of-center government feels that wearing face coverings in public is a bit of a security concern.  The traditionally permissive Dutch government said that "it plans to draw up legislation that will ban wearing burqas and other Muslim face veils in public".  This security move has been announced by the immigration minister who has previously won the big brother award.

Update - the Christian Democrats rode this issue, among others, to a mixed victory in the Dutch elections held on November 22nd.
