What's In A Naming Right?

Two National Football League clubs, the Giants and the Jets call Giant Stadium in the Meadowlands home.  They will still be sharing a home stadium when Giant Stadium is replaced by a new stadium in 2010.  What to call it is creating a major stir up in New York these days.  No, it's not going to be a toss between Giant or Jets Stadium.  The controversy surrounds the result of naming rights negotiations with a major insurance company.  On the one hand you have those who are upset that a company which used to insure the Auschwitz concentration camp might end up on the side of the building.  Then there are those who say, hasn't enough time passed since that unpleasantness?

American football begins yet another season in its annual quest for the Lombardi Trophy. Tee En Tee has shown its affinity for making baseless predictions -- and occasionally being right -- so it's as good a time as any to give those another shot.

Are You Ready For Some Fiscal Football? The NFL Vs. The IRS

The rules are quite clear. Beginning this year, any organization operating as a tax-free entity under Internal Revenue Code Section 501(c)(6) must report the salaries of all those officers paid more than (US)$150,000 per year. They are supposed to disclose this information on IRS Form 990. But apparently the lords of football disagree because they are fighting having to completely disclose the salaries of National Football League (NFL) executives who fall within the specified guidelines. The NFL argues it's different from the other 1.6 million non-profits in the US and the IRS couldn't disagree more.

As they have for each of the past 20 years, EA Sports is releasing its National Football League simulation game, Madden. It is of course, named for John Madden, the player, Hall of Fame coach and broadcaster who graced the game's cover for the first decade and whose recorded voice still does the color commentary inside the simulated games.

Should I Stay Or Should I Go?

It was a brief four months ago when we reported on Brett Favre's decision to retire after 17 years in the NFL, 16 of which he spent quarterbacking the Green Bay Packers. Now it seems the superstar is having second thoughts about retirement and wants back in. The team seems to be having a problem accommodating his request. All this comes down to either a classic case of miscommunication or high-handed behavior by a sports franchise or a prima donna act by a professional athlete. Or, it's all of the above.

Ladies and gentlemen, I have been to the Great Wall of China, I have seen the Pyramids of Egypt, I've even witnessed a grown man satisfy a camel. But never in all my years as a sportscaster have I witnessed something as improbable, as impossible, as what we've witnessed here today!

The 2007 regular season in the National Football League is over and the playoffs leading up to Super Bowl XLII are about to commence.  The question being will it end in Arizona with history being made (some thought it already had been and some thought not)?  Will either of a couple of studs get their second ring?  Will it put a smile on Jessica Simpson's face?  Or, will it end in something entirely different?

Review: Tuesday Morning Quarterbacking the Historic Mudfest at Heinz Field

Last night the Miami Dolphins fell to 0-11 in a heartbreaking loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers (8-3). The game was interesting because unseasonable torrential rains, coupled with a late turf switch following earlier college and high school games turned it the field into an ambiguous bowl of mud. The result? The lowest scoring game since 1993 (lowest scoring Monday night game since 1970), and the latest scoring game since the infamous "Snowplow Event" of 1982.

One of the most eventful off-seasons in US sporting history came to a close earlier this month as teams from the National Football League began playing their annual practice games in anticipation of the 2007 march to the Super Bowl. Teams like the Raiders, Lions and Browns who suffered abysmally in 2006 hope that their top draft pics and free agent pick ups will turn their fates around. Meanwhile teams like the defending Champion Indianapolis Colts hope that free agency losses don't doom them from the start.
