President-elect Obama's official announcement Monday of the new additions to his star studded cabinet include such notables as New York Senator Hillary Clinton as Secretary of State and Arizona Governor Janet Napolitano as head of the Department of Homeland Security.  This follows last week's announcement of an economic team that will include current New Mexico governor Bill Richardson as Secretary of Commerce, and current New York Fed Chief Paul Geithner as Secretary of Treasury.  With all of these high powered movers and shakers moving to Washington, the public and pundits are left with one big question - who will replace them, and what will be the consequences?

The American Family Association (AFA) wants to warn you of an insidious plot.  There will be no warning.  There will be no going back if it is allowed to continue.  Funny or not, they take it very seriously: "Watch and learn how to fight a well organized gay agenda to take over the cities of America, one city at a time...show it at home, in Sunday Schools, Bible Studies, and community groups. Purchase your copy, or a five pack to share with others today and spread the news - they're coming to your town!"

Liberal Circular Firing Squad in Action?

Nevermind that he's the United State's first black President.  Nevermind that he supports universal healthcare.  Nevermind that he's promoting an economic stimulus plan that will rival the New Deal. Nevermind that he talked openly in the campaign about redistributing the wealth.  According to many died-in-the-red liberals, Barack Obama is already proving he's not liberal enough.

Featured Diary: Obama's "Team of Rivals" Cabinet: Genius, or Disaster?

As Obama's picks for his new cabinet are rolled out, many are comparing his choices to Abraham Lincoln's so-called "Team of Rivals" cabinet--a cabinet that included four of Lincoln's political opponents.  In a well-regarded book by that name, Doris Kearns Goodwin argues that Lincoln's selection of that cabinet showed political genius.  Obama cited that book during his campaign, and suggested that he, too, would select a "team of rivals" cabinet.  Post-election, he has indicated that at least one Republican will be in his cabinet, possibly the existing Secretary of Defense Robert Gates, and the possible nomination of Hillary Clinton has been well-leaked.  But is this smart?

Should Obama Focus on Osama?

During the campaign, and particularly during the debates, then presidential candidate Barack Obama repeatedly focused on one of the biggest apparent failures of the Bush administration - its inability to capture the leader of Al-Qaeda, the mastermind of the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon (as well as numerous other attacks around the world), Osama bin Laden - and argued that if he was elected that he would work with laser-like focus to bring him to justice.

Employees for drug maker Schering-Plough Corp. and New York Life Insurance Co. gave more money to Max Baucus than employees of any other company in the most election cycle, which saw the Montana Democrat returned to the Senate for the sixth time. A mere week after winning, Baucus has called for a massive socialization of the American healthcare system which would require that all Americans buy into the system, much like the one recently proposed by Hillary Clinton. President-Elect Barack Obama has been a proponent of a reform measure that would provide extended coverage without turning Americans into beholden slaves of a disastrously failed system.

In Alaska The Election Stinks on Ice

The year was 2008. Americans were finally coming to the day of reckoning in the most anticipated election in decades. Voter registration and turnout were at an all time high and for Alaskans it was their time in the sun. Alaska's beloved Governor Sarah Palin was making history as the first woman to be the Republican candidate for Vice President. The US Senate's longest-serving Republican, Ted Stevens, was in a tight race for re-election despite having just been convicted of seven felonies. Yet for some reason Alaska's voter turnout was only 54.9%, the second lowest in state history for a Presidential election and a good 12 points below average. Something stinks here and it's not salmon.

The President is officially a lame duck. The eyes of the nation turn to the incoming Obama administration to guide us out the economic morass and wars on two fronts. But as we all remember from 2001, the last days and weeks of an administration can be quite controversial. As the end nears for President Bush speculation will mount as to whether or not he will use his pardon power. Who will he choose to forgive? Why? And when will it be announced?
