That's the power of one upset parent to throw a school district in a tizzy over a FREAKING TEXTBOOK! That's what happened when one parent complained about the Racine School District's choice of an eighth grade literature text book. No, it wasn't objected to because it espoused evolution over creationism. And it wasn't ripped on because of dirty words or naked people or gay marriage. This book was objected to because it contained mentions of Barack Obama without any mention of John McCain. Normally, this sort of thing might get handled at the district level. But, because the Wisconsin Republican Party got involved, it's now taken on the trappings of a federal case.

It was the scandal which cost one long-time incumbent his Congressional seat. It was also the scandal which, when stirred in with the other stuff rankling the public, ended up costing Republicans control of Congress and spelled the end of Dennis Hastert's Republican leadership role. It was the Mark Foley congressional page scandal and the House Ethics Committee just completed its investigation into the matter.

Career changes can be very scary prospects for some people. After all, you've been all comfortably cocooned in a nice, well paid job and you're about to jump off the precipice to God only knows what. That's when friends are important. Michael and Janet Huckabee face such a career change and, it turns out they they have some really good friends.

GOP Seeks Pink Purge; First Order Of Business - Burn Down The Log Cabin

In the English language we have these things known as oxymorons. You know, like "jumbo shrimp" or "government efficiency" - essentially two words, when joined together in a term, which make you scratch your head. In the world of politics one such oxymoron is "Gay Republicans" or as they're more familiarly called as a group, Log Cabin Republicans. These are loyal members of the GOP who happen to be gay. They belong to a political party which makes it a key political policy to fight against gay marriage, attaches moral qualifiers as a condition for receipt of money to fight AIDS, and cozies up to fundamentalist Christian groups. Now fundamentalist Christian groups are calling for a housecleaning of all those nasty gays through a "pink purge" of the GOP, trying to make the "big tent" just a bit smaller at the end of the day.

The above quote, with the slight modification at the end, comes from none other than Representative Mark Foley (R-Fl), who resigned this week amid allegations of sexual misconduct with an underage congressional page via e-mail and alleged exchanges with other pages via AOL Instant Messenger. Foley, a six-term Republican house representative from the district surrounding Palm Beach, Florida, says he feels "deeply sorry" and he "apologizes for letting down my family and the people of Florida I have had the privilege to represent."
